Design of the Campaign Map

Hey there,

I'm looking into making my own campaign map and am curious about the methods used in VC (I'm not looking for an express tutorial).
I really enjoyed the detail of the map--the rivers, mountains, layout of the continent, and felt it far surpassed any other map that I've seen.

How did the VC team create their map? What tools were used and in what workflow?
Did they edit it by hand using Morgh's? Work with Blender or another modeling program? Create various sets of maps for textures, height map, etc.?

Working on the map was challenging and very interesting. First one team member created the basic map. One critical decision here was: How to represent the real world distance between Scotland and Norway in game. Later several members edited the map for several reasons. For example:
- the complex sea travel system
- performance (!)
- accuracy of some historical locations
- handmade details for some special areas:
