tl;dr Clans deserting a faction should have a chance to instead become minor faction (mercenaries/quasi-bandits) instead of becoming direct vassals of another, more established faction.
1) It will keep them from permanently joining snowballing clans.
2) There will be more mercenaries for struggling factions to hire.
3) More caravans and villages will be getting raided in the late-game.
4) There will be more possibilities for conflicts between the extremes of doomstacks on doomstack or beating up non-threatening bandits.
5) Wars between more minor factions that don't like each other.
6) It makes more sense than clans eventually joining factions that they hate.
