Defensive Siege Positioning

I have a defensive siege battle to fight but for some reason it is putting me at the back of the map along with all of my troops so that by the time my army has walked across the enemy army is already at the top of the ladder!  Is this maybe the castle I have is buggy?

Seems like little point in having a castle if it offers no defensive benefits and is actually just a different themed open map.

Noticed that in one battle...

The garrisoned troops started up top while my soldiers were on the bottom and had to walk up the stairs. Fortunately the enemy was slowly pushing their siege tower so I still had time to eat lunch, go to the store, take a nap, then when I woke up the siege tower made its way to the castle.

Of course if it was a ladder instead...

If I jump off a tower and take damage I can get to the top of the ladder at the same time as the enemy lords!
