I'm using photoshop for editing dds files and I noticed that quality gets worse after each safe. Is there specific setting for dds format that I need to set in order not to loose quality?

I always convert them to jpg for editing and then convert them back to dds. There is no quality loss in that u should try it.

Yes there is, jpg is a lossy format no matter how high you crank up the quality slider. For lossless you want png if you want to be able to view it outside of photoshop, otherwise psd.

.dds can be saved into lossless format.

All the DXT ones are lossy as well as the seldom used 3Dc.

You usually want to save the file as 8.8.8 RGB or 8.8.8.8 ARGB when working on the file and once finished, pack it into DXT format.
Grayscale images can be easily saved with 8L, and just extracting the alpha channel from image save it as 8A.
