Of course.

I'll start putting up the OOC piecemeal today/tonight, with a focus on what I want for  character applications, so you guys can start working things out while I finish things up.

Character Sheet with Explanations and Template:

Name: A good, solid name, the more historical the better.
Gender: Male or Female are both acceptable given the covert nature of the unit.
Age: 18-45, that being said, I think the middle twenties to thirties would be the best fit, this being a specialized and irregular unit. So, if you want a very young character, I'd like you to clear it with me first.
Nationality: I am fairly flexible with nationality, although the most realistic/historical recruit for the unit would be Germans with Slavic ancestor. So, I would hope for a majority of German characters that happen to speak/know enough Russian/Polish/etc. to get around or blend in if need be. However, there would of course be room for historical "friends" of Germany like Romania, Finland and more, so long as some plausible explanation is given for why the character ends up serving with the German Armed Forces.
Appearance: A short, concise description of what your character looks like.
Personality: Simply, define some traits of your character. Please avoid characters that would be a burden for the team. Outright psychopaths, overly emotional loners and evil assassins are not wanted.
Biography: The story of your character, ideally, I would like some information on their origins, education, family status (if any) and how they found their way into one of the most elite and secretive units of the Deustch forces. Please try to be somewhat realistic and historical, good story telling can only stretch the truth so far in a historical RP.

Name:
Gender:
Age:
Nationality:
Appearance:
Personality:
Biography:

In regards to length, I can be flexible but I would off the top of my head expect at least 250 words for appearance and personality, along with 500 or so words for the biography.

The way it works is you send your CS to me and then I will post it once I approve it.

Edit: However, feel free to write what you are roughly planning, it might avoid people creating too similar characters. Also, don't limit your character too much to one role, say SUPER L337 SNIPER, since in any given operation multiple skill sets will be required...though of course some specialization is good.

Ranks will be added later, but I am deciding on how in depth to go with that.

Pulling my evil GM card, the leader of our merry band is a former Austrian Gebirgsjäger, simply called Fuchs, or at least that is what his file claims.

I'm kind of going the mysterious route with the character, so I haven't decided how much to reveal yet, but I'll try to have a CS up sooner rather than later.

Everyone should be a decent marksman and stealth specialist (past experience or training once reassigned). Especially, in a small unit like this, since if one person is out of action, another needs to at least adequately be able to fill their shoes.

Sabotage, recon and sneaking around behind enemy lines kind of necessitates all of those skills. Although, I suppose if someone had a very compelling character that was less of a combat specialist and more of a "spy" or something else that would work as well.

June 1941, Operation Barbarossa or there abouts, I haven't quite decided whether to start In Media Res on the day it all starts or a bit before to give everyone a chance to ease into character.

Naturally, that doesn't mean it has to be your characters first real battle, if anything I would prefer the opposite to be true. Since, it seems quite likely the characters started off in other units to begin with.

Oh I don't mean just any sharpshooter. I mean sniper with a capital S, N, I, and so forth. But for flavour I suppose he could also be an improvised weapons expert. It'd fit the backstory I have in mind fairly well.

That's fine, I just want all of you to understand roles may be quite fluid in the unit once the fighting starts.

It's expected that your characters have specialties, however, if possible avoid making a character that can only do one job, as that one job might not be required in most situations.

You should totally steal from Tom Clancy and have a Norwegian Biathlon athlete/sniper.

Oh, that I'm fully aware of. Just wanted to point out this guy's main purpose in life is to peg Ivans from a hill 500 metres away.

I did consider that. But went in a different direction.

And that's hardly a proper character draft. Just spitballing ideas. That's what this stage is for isn't it?

So far, the idea for my character is to have a pretty well-rounded and experienced soldier type. His combat role would be as an assault trooper or support gunner. But as for why he should be able to speak Russian, I'm having a bit of trouble thinking of feasible ways for that to be the case for someone so plainly German.
Perhaps his father was on the Eastern Front in WW1, and learned it there, teaching it to his son? Hmmm.

But the character traits are where I really need to flesh this out, I think.

His family could be relatively recent immigrants from Eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, etc.), a number of German aristocratic families had their roots in Russia and he could also be from the "Sudetenland" since it was a part of Poland/Czech Republic/Slovakia where there were German speaking natives.

Historically, the Bradenburgers tried to recruit exactly those type of people.

Rather than recruiting only those who embodied the Aryan ideal of the übermensch, Hippel scoured the Reich to find Slavs, Poles and other ethnics willing to fight for Germany. Every recruit had to be fluent in at least one foreign language. However, many recruits were fluent in several. The recruits were also schooled in the customs and traditions of their specific region. Knowing every habit and mannerism in their area of operations would enable the men to blend in and operate as effective saboteurs.
With that it mind it doesn't really seem silly to have a collection of such "rare" individuals in the squad, since those are the exact people the commanding officers would be looking for.

Edit: Three characters received so far, so yay!

I have der Hauptmann done as well, which makes it four.

Hoping to see some more interesting characters soon, I'll be working on adding more stuff to the proper OOC and Character repository today.
