Dark fantasy

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi! Could any of you possibly suggest any dark fantasy books. Darker the better. Would be lovely if it was low fantasy but won't mind high fantasy either. Even horror books are okay, if they have a good story. I understand English and Estonian, so I would appreciate if they were in one of these languages.

Thanks for replies.

No? It's dark fantasy. Dracula by Brann Stoker is better though. I got it lent to me for over a year and didn't read yet (totally forgot).

Bram Stoker would probably be more horror than dark fantasy. Twilight is published fanfiction porn for people who want to enjoy that type of thing with other people without explicitly doing so.
In any case, the Harlequin series does it much much better.

Would the dark tower series by Stephen King be considered dark fantasy?

Try " Wheel of Time". An awesome series of books (24 of em) which is kinda dark...There's definitely nothing "cuddly woodly" in it anyway.

Would A Song of Ice and Fire be considered dark? It certainly is at times. Children die. Main characters die. Everybody can die.
I definitely consider it. Greatest series IMO.

Guess I'll go with that then, have heard a lot of good about it as well.

Imagine my surprise when, reading the WP article concerning that book's series, i saw "There is a Wheel of Time based mod, entitled "Shadow Rising," for the TaleWorlds game Mount&Blade.".

How good is the book series really? Compared to, for example, the Foundation series by Asimov?

Well I've never read The foundation series but if i would compare any other serie I've read (Stories from Drenai, Cesar, Bilbo etc) Then Wheel of time is the #1.

some of Clive Barker's books could be considered dark fantasy (although they could also be considered urban horror)

I'm not to sure of the name, but I think there is a series called Borderlands. The first book is called Covenants. It was quite a decent read. I normally read sci-fi and I actually enjoyed this fantasy series.

Chronicles of Drenai are pretty dark at times, "Tenaka Shadowprince" was one of the greatest of them, you really felt it when someone died. (And there are always people who die)

Joe Abercrombie's First Law:
“A bloody and relentless epic of vengeance and obsession in the grand tradition ... The battles are vivid and visceral, the action brutal, and the pace headlong.”  - George RR Martin

Have only read the first book (each book is in two volumes to double the income he makes, and there are three "books") Was pretty good, not really high fantasy, though there is magic and such jibber jabber.

What crazy place do you live in? I've read all four of his books and each was in one volume. I'd say they properly fit the dark fantasy requirement and I'd say they're very good books too.
