AAAARGHHHH!!!!

Okay. I'm trying to use Thorgrim's method to create sabre blades for the Jedi Mod.

Here is the (crap) texture.

Here is the alpha channel.

The material is set to "tex_mul_factor_alpha". The texture is saved as DDS DXT3. Yet the texture doesn't show up in the game as transparent, and it didn't when saved as DXT5 either :???:

Can anyone who has mucked around with shaders and so on suggest why this might be?

Probably because the shader you are using uses the Alpha channel as its specularity channel and not its opacity channel. Try a different one or switch it up.

That's the one that was suggested to me. Is there a list yet of which shaders do what?

It sounds like there's something else wrong with the material's shader, perhaps one of the values not displayed in Simpson's editor.
I'd say to try copying the material from one that's like it (rather than simply setting the shader on the existing material), but I'm not sure what that'd be. Maybe the material for water that uses that water shader?
Hmm.

Also I don't know how to separate the handle and blade's shader, so the one is shaded with the iron_shader, and the other has solid colour with alpha. Please help me!

If i´m not wrong you have to make two seperate obj files one with the hilt, one with the blade in them.

Then name them like lightsaber1 and lightsaber2 then the game should use both. At least thats what i believe.

Thanks!

Np and tell us if that worked. I heard it quite some time ago, but never tested it myself.

Just broke my materials.brf file, and had to re-install. The only actual INSTALL file I've got for Mount&Blade is 0.601! I might just play it for a while before I upgrade.

Lol. Better backup your things next time.
I thought I did! I must've lost my backup somewhere...

MY GOD! WHY would anyone want to go back to the pre-.730 movement speeds? Combat is like swimming through a thick tank of treacle! It's not like the solution to the run-faster-than-horses problem is hard, just increase the horse speeds past their current geriatric status![/rant]

No, I'm afraid it doesn't. Could it be that it is something else, like _1, _2, or _a, _b?

tex_mul_factor_alpha should do the trick for the alpha... are you sure the alpha channel got saved right? Try re open the DDS and check it is still there. If it still doesnt work, apply the texture to trees or something to check it works for them... if it does then your material settings must not be right.

lightsaber1 and lightsaber2 should work too... though I didn't get round to trying that.

Just double check everything... chances are something didnt quite get set right.

The DDS looks fine to me...I can only assume it's the shader/material settings. I tried copying the material from the logo on the main menu, which is exactly the effect I want - the logo is "Mount&Blade" on a black background, the alpha channel fades into the background to create a shadow. But unfortunately that didn't really help either.
