AAAARGHHHH!!!!
Okay. I'm trying to use Thorgrim's method to create sabre blades for the Jedi Mod.
Here is the (crap) texture.
Here is the alpha channel.
The material is set to "tex_mul_factor_alpha". The texture is saved as DDS DXT3. Yet the texture doesn't show up in the game as transparent, and it didn't when saved as DXT5 either

Can anyone who has mucked around with shaders and so on suggest why this might be?
