It's quite annoying when you start out on normal damage and AI on good.

In your first battle against mountain bandits or sea raiders you get a javelin in your face... 69 damage right away...

I don't know how many times this have happened... quite annoying.
Please don't tell me to set my settings down...
Post your epic experiences!

Getting a better helmet may help.

If you are using a 1H, hold your shield up while charging them, only lower it when you are about to strike them.

There's not much you can do if they get a lucky shot at your head. If you want the lowest risk, stand behind your army as an archer or crossbowman.

I was on the horse, I had my shield up, I had about 30 denars to buy for... c'mon..

Did you noticed that you actually lower/rise your shield with vertical movement of mouse? You can protect your face or feet.

But I agree, those axes and javelins are dead accurate, sometimes I think they got heat seeker tips

I had problem fighting steppe bandit's cause in the first charge i killed one of them and got killed by him in the same time  We killed each other with lances.

My most epic story: I was being all cocky and full of myself, thinking I was pretty much invincible when charging into a Khergit army of 82 with my 6 companions. Was holding my sword up to decapitate the first Khergit I'd come across. His lance got me first...

I did have a good laugh over that one!

My most epic was I just got my Nord army up against the Vaegirs...

The map was flat like a pancake (yummi).

After about 10 seconds I got Headshooted by 1337 Marksmen...

Yeah it's very humbling to get a "insert weapon" to the face. Sometimes you charge the enemy, thinking they're all fodder, then get hit by a Knight/Lancer/Lord...and realize, okay there are some good troops out there. Reload.

I had a good one where, on the very first round of a tournament, 4 teams of 7 jousters charged out; at the moment of impact, exactly at the same time, the guy I was aiming at killed my horse and I went flying into him with my lance and knocked him out (I guess; it happened so fast I'm not really sure what happened). When the dust settled he was down (under my horse somehow) and I was on foot in the middle of the melee where I immediately got bonked on the head. I looked at the log and saw the guy that knocked out my horse (and who I knocked out) was King Harlaus!

Tournaments in Praven can be terrifying.

@ OP: Don't stress it too much though. Frankly I find "losing" in Warband more fun than most games. Look at classic adventure books, your Robin Hoods and such, the hero is always getting captured and wounded and ending up being tended by a fair maiden somewhere for a while before he heals up and goes back into the fight.

Yeah, never underestimate Vaegirs. On vanilla M&B, I was charging at some Vaegirs, lance down, and then out of nowhere a vaegir horseman comes around and decapitates me XD

no heat seekers... just head seekers

have had my few encounters with head seeking objects in this great game so far...

I recall the tournaments of native 0.632 with full damage. After a brief loading time, you get on the arena, and in 1.5 seconds you're dead from a headshot Kradus scored immediately after you got in.

it's those easy kills which make me play on easy setting. I do re-enactment, everyone dies in about 90% of the fights, and that's how M&B on hard mode is. If I wanted to die a lot, I'd play on hard, but I get enough of that with re-enactment combat, so I'd rather play on god mode, and die at practice on wednesday and saturdays (that, and I'd rather not have to rebuild my army every time I die). On the other hand, since this is about epic wins and/or deaths, I'll just describe a re-enactment win instead. During the week at Moesgaard, I was standing in the middle of a shieldwall. I took out a german guy who reached out too far to kill someone, and that created a small hole, a reasonably fresh daneaxeuser stepped into the hole, and I killed him too when he reached too far, then I risked it, and sprinted through the hole, and managed to not get struck, I proceeded to rush down the whole line, striking people down, and the whole thing collapsed.

Does that count?

Thats why I love this game. You can never be a "Superman". No matter what level you are, what armour youre wearing. A well landed blow or well aimed shot and.... battle over.

Lol, anyone get knocked out by a rock....I mean, really? I did, had my shield up and everything (well shield skill 0). Damn looter.....lucky bastards. I hunted them down shortly after I escaped. But....a ROCK! man, those stones are no joke with no helmet.
