Crouching

Sergeant Knight at Arms
I remember there was an old mod that had crouching, though you could not use weapons.
Does anyone know any way to make a mission template or something that will make you crouch for as long as you hold a certain key? (and you should be able to shoot too)
If there is a way, then it could probably be made so that you can go prone too. Perfect for FPS-centered mods.

the problem would be with the attack animations.  I don't think there are any animations for a crouched move or to lie down.  I have used one of the fall animations to make a zombie drop down on a fallen human to eat him, but that would be the closest, and it looks like thier falling.

this thread had a cool concept about the acf_displace_position flag which I want to experiment with more...

Maybe you could use the jump animation with your legs raised up, and then displace yourself a foot or two down towards the ground or something.....  ;)

Well I tried with using the jump animation and it worked pretty fine actually. But the problem was that you couldn't have both crouching and a activity with yourr hand...

So the hands did the same as they do in the jjump animation.

You can jump and attack though, can't you?

Actually, now I think about it, I ready the attack first, then jump, and release the attack on the way down...  would that be possible?

And does the fact that the player is moved down mean that they are actually reduced in size in terms of their collision mesh - arrows that would have hit them will now pass over?  This'll be great if you can get it working fully.

I'm sure that it would affect the bounding box around the various parts of the agent (there are several, one for the head, one for the body, and one for the legs).  I think the bigest issue would be walking in the crouch.  I wish I could import/export animations, this would be easy to do.

Well, how do you make animations then? I don't know anything about it but i'm a quick learner

I remember the old LotR mod had missions where you sneaked around, and had to press a key to sneak right? but I don't remember if the anymation was any different, you walked slower, etc.

I would make the animations in max.  I've got about 10 years (8 hobby, 2 freelance work) experience animating in max.  Just export the body SMD file, and load it in max.  The bones get loaded too.  Then you move them around on specific frames.  Just don't know what to export as, or how to get it into max.  Only one person that I know knows how to do it, but he's not sharing till his mod is released.

I'll find out. Looks like i have the next day occupied
I'll only do animations in the following 30 days, since i'm not gonna buy it for $3500, i'm not insane
You are talking about Autodesk 3ds Max aren't you?

This is the major problem with making new animations, rigging new skeleton meshes, importing new animation groups, etc. at the current time.  Not that I blame the guy for not sharing his knowledge.  It'll make his mod, when it does arrive, a definite download by every single modder as well as most folk who just want to play with new anims and giants, dwarves, etc.

If I knew what he knows I'd probably keep it for myself as well.

Why, Gangs of Glasgow, of course....!

Nah, I'm lying.  Come to think of it, I'm not even sure who this mythical guy with the supernatural ability to import animation meshes and so on actually is.  There was a modder in the olden times who verifiably added some entirely new creatures - with their own meshes, animations, hitboxes, etc.  But I don't remember who it was for sure now either.

It was one of the big modders from the .707 -.808 times, when the real innovations and surprises were being added.  I don't remember the name, I just know that someone knows, and doesn't feel like sharing.  Fair play to him.

Actually. I think that keeping knowlegde like that is a way to disrespect all of us. I really think that what he does is a damn ***** style. And if I got knowlegde like that. I would of shared it. Cause if everyone knew. we could made soo much better mods. So  by keeping it in just gives me the will to punch him in the face.

And since he don't get any cash for his mod anyway. So then he doesn't need to "Save" his mods.

And  it is MAXHARMAN we are talking about flanged

Maybe he was holding out for a place on the dev team?  Unfortunately for him, the dev team can clearly add new animations and creatures at will, if the spirit moves them.

I understand your frustration Bjorne, but if he did it for himself, he can keep it for himself.  I hope he has lots of fun with it.  By himself.

Anyways, we're going off-topic, and it's kind of my fault...  Let's learn to do it for ourselves.  Since it's known to be doable, it shall be done.

I'll be here waiting when someone figures out how!

But crouching should be easier than adding a whole new skeleton/mesh/animation subset.  The OP is already on the right track, I think, using the jump animation but teleporting the player down a bit.  If all we need to do now is figure out how to ready an attack from that position, then someone here will know how.  I hope.

Just to clear something up, MAXHARDMAN did find the way to do it on his own I believe.  Also, if you make an animation set, e will convert it for you as long as you let him use it in his mod.  I think I heard that he will release the knowledge after his mod comes out.  I'm guessing he wants his mod to be special when it's released.

Again, I could do the animation, and maybe I will.  I just don't know sequence lengths and such.  I guess I can base it off the length of a walk cycle.  If it is done like a walk cycle, you should be able to attack while in that mode.  Look at the flags for the walk/run animations.  If he converts it, I'll post it for you all.

But, back to my old question. This "max" program is Autodesk 3ds Max, the one that costs $3495, or something cheaper/free that i haven't seen on the search list?

If you're lucky, you can get a "free edition" from your school. Or get the trial.

Or use some other programs like Milkshape. Although I dislike that. :P
