i might be wrong but it would be cool if you could just crouch and lie down then you could sniper all horse mounted units

There are exactly zero weapons in this game which are effective at killing things while you are lying down. The only reason why a knight or solder might want to lie down during combat, was if he was sleeping, dead or both.

Crouching has been discussed before. Its only real use would be to dodge a high-aimed shot. At present, it's pretty much as useless as the jump ability.

It COULD be interesting. Not for fighting though, for hiding

You could tell your units to crouch in the bushes, while a mounted column goes by. Then run out screaming and ambushing.

When crouched, your person could be retextured like the ground, like Joint Operations.

I just like the idea of hiding in bushes.

:Runs of to hide in some bushes:

Bah, why cower behind a bush when the worst thing that could happen is you get knocked out and they steal a few items from you.

Could you imagine trying to crouch in 600Lbs of armour!?

however i think it should be possible if you are wearing clothing that allows that type of movement. but the only ones that i think it would be effective for would be crossbowmen or if your entire party is wearing gear that allow movement then yea, you could hide in the bushes and possibly perform an ambush.

Do I sense the words of a sniper noob here? (no offense meant)

Actually, I can think of a use for crouching...

Being charged by cavalry with spears. Lightly armoured troops could duck & cover, I think, as the spearmen (IRL, though) could not attack close to ground for the fear of sticking the spear-tip into ground.

But for ranged units, crouching does no good. Perhaps with a windlass, you could re-load a crossbow, but shooting could be a bit difficult. Shooting a bow would be pretty impossible. (At least aiming.)

you couln't even crouch in the bushes, as A) there aren't enough bushes in the maps, B) enemy units automatically know where you are.

Crouching or a sort of kneeling in order to ground a spear/pike might be useful to prevent a direct cavalry charge, though admittedly the way attacks come from all over once battle's begun, I see it more as a novelty move than something an individual trooper might be using often. (While he's confidently fending off one rider, others are coming from the left/right/back.

Ranged weapons and crouching doesn't appear feasible, though again a half kneeling shot should be possible, but a fully prone position on the ground? Only if you're faking death and want the battle over.

Depends. If you're a knight who's been tramping about in armor since he could walk, you're going to have a lot more mobility because your body has adjusted to the weight. You could even do cartwheels if you put your mind to it.

If you're a footman who's only worn lighter armor until you chance across some lucky loot on the battlefield one day, you're going to have more of a problem.

Knights could have done cartwheels in that armour. I read it in a school textbook.

Jumping is ridiculously useful, you can jump with a platemail to dodge a lance charge. I think there should be movements like jump to left, jump to right, crouch down which could fastly be performed by unarmored people and slowly performed by armored one (according to which type they wear) so it would give some rightful advance to those who prefer no armor. Unless it becomes get-the-best-of-everything type of game.

A full suit of plate armour wasn't as heavy as you might expect. Modern soldiers (with guns) have to carry more weight than a knight did. And they are still expected to run, crouch, lie flat and kill the enemy.

There's one thing that really calls for the ability to crouch: blocking with shields. It's not an issue now, since shields offer full frontal protection, but if they're ever made to have an actual area block, crouching behind your shield to defend yourself from incoming missile fire will be an absolutely essential feature.

Crouching is often a very defensive maneuver to avoid projectiles. A duck button would be right at home in a siege scenario (if/when m&b ever does do siege) But for fighting out in the field, a crouch button is next to useless.

I suppose this is why m&b doesn't have crouch, but Valandil (a mediaeval multiplayer mod for half-life 2 currently in development) will most likely feature crouching, because siege warfare will play a big part of the game.
