crossbow when horseback

playing a mounted archer is my favourite type of combat. what i'd like to see is a possibility to fire AND reload a crossbow when riding a horse. it wasn't impossible nor uncomon to use this weapon on horseback in real life.
the game should include this. but not to make the combination to lethal, several restrictions should be made. like a longer reload time and possibility to use only the lover pull-weight crossbows.
it would add to the realism. besides, a rider with a crossbow looks sooo cool

Well i doubt it was possible to reload a bow while the horse was moving.

Read how reloading was actually done using your foot :

Though it would be nice to be able to reload while the horse is on full stop, i'm not sure how it could/was done.

I, too, think that when your horse isn't moving, you should be able to reload the crossbow.

Why not just use a bow?
You will not hit much with a crossbow on horseback, as a longer reload time will just about eliminate the usefullness of it against anything other than river pirates. When fighting knights for exapmle with a mounted archer, you maybe only hit 1/3 of the amount you would hit against a foot soldier, or if you were both on foot. This is due to the changes in direction by the enemy when on horseback. So you need to be able to shoot fairly often to take advantages of shot opportunities, and make up for the lower accuracy.
This is why the strong/kergit bows are better on HB than the war bow (imo).

"An expertly handled longbow had greater range, better accuracy, and a much faster rate of fire than an average crossbow, but the value of the crossbow came in its simplicity: it could be used effectively after a week of training, while a comparable single-shot skill with a longbow could take years."

And the same in the game - even if you're a melee expert, you can still use ranged weapons until the enemy closes in - a bow however would require a lot of points, and skill to use decently, while on the other hand you can use a crossbow for a devastating effect even on early stages on the game, although bows are better on the longer run.

There were crossbows designed to fire from horseback. They were much smaller and designed to be used with one hand, and had much less range and stopping power than a standard crossbow.
IIRC they were designed for hunting birds.

there was a troop type which tried without much success to emulate the effectiveness of the mongols by mounting breast-plated light crossbowmen on horseback, but their lack of rate of fire compared to the steppe warriors made them all but outclassed in all respects.

ehhm, so you're saying crossbow should be reloaded while horseback ?

There are all sizes of xbows available ppl. There are large xbows (arbalests), medium xbows, and small (light) xbows. A small xbow can be easily reloaded with your hands, without no need of foots, so they can be used on horseback. There are accounts of units composed of lightly armored crossbowmen that fought on horseback, too.

There was a device called a "goats foot" which allowed anybody to reload a fairly strong crossbow using the simple mechanics of leverage. I believe it was designed to be used from horseback.

You are correct sir.

Which rises another issue, that light crossbows and heavy crossbows take the same time to reload in game ...

oh, i didn't know reload depends on speed ...
and instead of sticking to the details you should be giving me free beer.
