Crossbow unit advanced strategy implementation

So, I watched a video on youtube about different shields through the time. in the video, it mentions that the big shield that crossbow men carry, not only used as a defense method with one hand axe/sword, but also stuck into the dirt, and protects the crossbow man while one is reloading the crossbow, which makes a lot of sense for the HUGE shield.

Question: is it possible to implement the same technique for in game crossbow units? if so, it will make the game more realistic.
