crashes when graphics are configured

please help, everytime i change my graphic settings in mount and blade, it crashes and i've tried reinstalling and installing mount and blade numerous times. Also because i cant change the graphic settings, it lags so much that it renders the game unplayable.

Specs: 5000+ AMD Anthlon 64 x2 processer, ATI radeon x1650SE, Windows Vista Ultimate, 2 Gigabytes of Ram, 320 GB harddrive.
