Crash during battles

Hello,

I am playing M&B for a year now, and downloaded Sword of Damocles recently.
I used to play with the battlesizer set to 300, which is not a problem considering my hardware :

core 2 duo @ 3.2Ghz
GTX280
3gb of RAM

However, when playing SOD, I've encountered many crash during battles.
Thinking it was caused by an addon (i had many), i uninstalled and reinstalled M&B and SOD without any other mod but the battlesizer (set to 200 instead of 300 this time).

But that's the same : each time i enter a big battle (more than 150 troops), the game crash during the battle. It can be after 30s, 1min or whatever. It's not recurring. It's just unstable.
I am absolutely sure this is caused by SOD since i had no problem playing such large battles in Native for months and even now .

I tried lowering corpses and ragdolls, even set them to 0, but that didn't change anything either. My only solution is to lower the battlesizer to 100 or so. Which i am of course not going to go, i will play vanilla with 300 men instead of SOD with 100 ^^'.

However the best would be to play SOD with 300, so if you have any idea to help me, i would be very grateful ^^.

Have you tried disabling Formations and Moral? That would be the first thing popping in my mind. I know there are some serious lag issues with Formations in certain situations.

Well i *tried* but not a lot.
I'll try seriously later, i'm quite busy from now.

This is a clue but i'm not sure it is the reason, as i said i tried. One time. I'll do more testing.

Well... Make new clear install of SoD. This should help. Be sure to use latest version. Disabling formations and morale might also help (in reports menu there is game settings option).

Well... i did some testing this morning, and i found that lowering the video options (in general) makes the crash disappear.
I already reinstalled M&B and SOD, i tried disabling formations and morale, but these didn't work.

However, i do not understand why i should have to lower my video options with SOD to play, since i don't need it with Native.
Particulary considering my overpowered computer for M&B .

SoD adds almost 500 mb of new stuff so this can harm even overpowered computer

Make clear install as I suggested though. The problem shouldn't happen, It works perfect for me and I have simmilar computer to yours. The only "low" setting I have is 1024/768 resolution (I'm used to it so much that higher resolutions look wierd for me  ).

I already reinstalled SOD, but i will try again.

Could you tell me what are your settings? Battlesizer, options etc. So that i could test in the same conditions than yourself ^^.

Battlesizer 250 (or 300), bodies, ragdols etc one step from unlimited. I play without morale and formations, resolution 1024 and everything else the highest.

After some more testing, it seems that i do not have any more crash by turning off ragdolls.
I mean : setting them to 0.

I don't understand why, it is quite disturbing but well, i can live with it .

Still, it's strange . I am using the latest nvidia drivers which include physX, maybe it conflicts with M&B physic engine?
Whatever... i think it's solved, but turning off ragdolls on my computer is really not normal and i don't have this problem in Native.

Thanks for trying to help me vonmistont .

Man I don't even dare to dream about such thing and you just write it so casually it hurts

Are you getting the cannot restore vertex buffer error? Turning after bodies fixes that.

i had the same crash problem and i reduced the number of corpses to 0 when i m in a very big battle like 500vs500 it didnt crashed even i have the battle size set to 400!!! and dont disable the ragdoll, without them battles wont give enough satisfiction!! now i can siege capitols of kingdoms while kings in them (which means nearly 500 people) and i won (which means i had 600-700) people without any crash...

Sometimes yes, but this is not the same crash. Vertex buffer thing happens in large battles when you set corpses too high, indeed.
But even when setting my corpses to 0, i still crash until i turn off ragdolls. Then i can set the corpses to 40 or unlimlited or whatever, i won't crash.

Unless i have an extremely large battle, as everyone, of course .

I believe that M&B has a bug when it comes to their battle engine.  It seems to happen much more frequently if you are running SoD, probably because of the increased resources provided by it.

I know that my own rig: an i7 920 @ 3.6 GHz with 6GB ram and an ATI 4870 w/ 1GB commonly has the dreaded vertex allocation error.  There is absolutely no reason why my rig cannot handle many times the best settings in M&B even with the additional material in SoD.  Ergo, there must be a bug in M&B (or possibly some other driver that M&B interacts with - the video or sound driver being the most likely of external causes).

I have played with number of rag dolls, forcing the game to preallocate more video memory of every kind, etc., and nothing has worked except to reduce the battle size to something abysmally small.

I run M&B at 1680x1050, if that makes any difference?  Who knows?

I run mine at 1680x1050! That might mean something... plus we have the same graphics card.

Is it the restore or reload vertex buffer crash? because that's the one I get

In that case, make sure your drivers are properly updated and lower the amount of corpses on the battlefield. That should solve it.

Did you try setting the ragdolls to 0 as i said?

I also have had to reduce de battle sizer to 200. In battle involving more than 200 soldiers, i will crash with this vertex buffer error.
I guess this is not normal, considering most of other players with my hardware seems to run SOD perfectly with twice this sizer.
