Crafting doesn't make much sense...

It's getting better, but still...

The commission system is an improvement, but...

- Rewards are kind of a mess. There's way too much randomness, so a lot of the stuff you'd make at early levels is unavailable because you don't have the recipe. By the time you get the recipe it's no longer worth your time to craft it. The big rewards are also way too big. Getting 80-120K for an axe is way overboard. Rewards should be higher on the low end and lower on the high end.

- Reach is completely irrelevant. You can make a weapon that's 3 feet short of what was ordered and still get full payment and a bonus.

- Everything else is way too harsh. If your two-handed sword is a gram too heavy or a point too low on pierce damage you lose 85% of your payment, even if it exceeds expectations in every other category.

- Unlocking parts is too arbitrary and there are too damned many of them. Why not at least let us learn to make a specific part by smelting weapons that use it?

- Crafting puts way too much cash in the player's hand, although I guess it helps counterbalance the idiotically high prices for heavy armor.

- Seems like javelins are bugged. I keep getting them absolutely perfect - solid green all the way down - but getting docked most of the commission for no clear reason.

In conclusion, it's a pretty good start, but it still needs a lot of work. It would be particularly nice to have some way to focus which parts I unlock. It seems like if I make something hard (even very poorly) I unlock a bunch of completely random parts. I ought to be able to learn more about swords (or axes or whatever) by making and smelting swords (or axes or whatever). Just give me a way to have some sort of control so that I can actually learn to make stuff that I want, rather than a random hodgepodge.

Yeah
It would be nice to actually roleplay a blacksmith... but you can't.
Also, It doesn't make sense to be a commander and forge weapons.

I think smithing shouldn't be a player character skill. The way it is, is kinda confusing and more tedious than fun.
I know it's not finished yet, but so what? I really doubt that all the problems people had pointed out will be solved then.

Important perspective point re: Unlocks ~

It takes an END 8, 5 Foci (both as soon as possible, END 9 when perk available) single character who takes all the increased unlock rate perks *over 311 ranks in Smithing* to unlock everything... doing both forging and smelting for the unlock-progress-xp... which are then unlocked for every Clan member for the rest of the game.

That's an argument for "there needs to be an 'unlock all' option" so that players can get on with playing the rest of the game.
(and the effect of that can be done with Console, although a bothersome and fiddly process)

Single player game; play how you want. IMO Smithing should not be by definition a horrible grind for players wanting to get on with the game.

As I see it, smithing is under developed. What they need to do is include armor and custom troops.

Basically, once I get to design the armor and weapons I want, I then get to make them and outfit my troops with it.

With regard to custom troops, there can be 2 ways to achieve this:

1. Once you create a template, you then get to hire them straight out. Easy and nice

2. You have to manually create x sets of equipment and then outfit the soldiers of similar levels with it. This might mean they need to introduce levels for weapons and armor but I don't see that as an issue since they've already done so for bows. In fact, that's probably a good idea to make things consistent.

This approach means you can take a legionnaire or an oathsworn or any level 26 soldier and apply the new equipment to them. Their individual stats stay the same, but the gear looks different. That could be difficult I suppose and if so, then I don't think people will get too fussed if it's locked to a certain group only, that is if it's for a legionnaire, then all of them have to be legionnaires.

Ah, that's would be nice able to craft armor and outfit your troop way you want, maybe craft horse armor improve looking cool, so go on.

I had isses, sometime best armor is not good look for background, let's said player want stay in faction's armor, but other faction's armor better armor rating, and I would like each faction able to craft best armor rating while still look of faction, more or less. so no one need to use other faction to get best armor rating but look out of place.

Smithing has a multitude of problems.
First it's far too grindy. Forcing players to sit in wait in town just to recharge some imposed stamina system is way too punishing. Whoever thought that up needs to be fired. Imho it's on the level of mobile games grindy and I'm surprised there isn't a pay to speed up option. Oh god I hope I didn't give anyone at Taleworlds a bad idea. :ohdear:

Second it's way too random. You'd have better luck gambling and expecting to win a million dollars than getting the parts you want to make a nice sword/axe/spear etc with the random unlock system.

Third there are way too many unlocks. Most of these unlocks are in no way different than the others except in looks and even then some of them you can hardly tell them apart except maybe blade shape or possibly handle other than that it's pretty much impossible to tell one part from another when your character is actually using the weapon.

Fourth it makes zero sense to rp as a smith in this game because it doesn't fit the lore of you trying to be come a lord or king. It was literally thrown in last minute and it shows because it has all the appeal and subtly of a turd in a punch bowl and this is coming from someone who loves crafting in games.

you can't even rp your own lord/king/queen let alone rp a blacksmith..

This is one of the things that bugs me the most. They are all random, sometimes you can't craft entire weapon types because you haven't unlocked parts, it happens to me a lot with two handed maces since they only have 2 (?) heads.

And then, when you unlock a tier 5 blade, even if you're very low level, you can craft a weapon with it and get a minimal penalty that barely has any effect on the price or stats.

Why don't they make something more reasonable like start off with one part in each category for every weapon, and you unlock more parts for the weapon type you're currently crafting/smelting instead of it being completely random. Then maybe, just maybe, gate the tier of the part you're unlocking based on your smithing level, so you can't unlock a bunch of tier 5 parts as a level 50 smith, and you only start unlocking those when you get to level 200 or something.

You know, like actually trying to have some reasonable progression? What is the logic behind unlocking the best parts at the start of the game lol
