Coureurs des Bois

p120.jpg

The Coureurs des Bois (English; Runners of the Woods), are historically, independent entrepreneurial French-Canadians. However, we are not French-Canadians but are still independent entrepreneurs. As Coureurs we are outdoors-men, woodsmen if you will. Naturally this also makes us adept explorers, knowing the woods and rivers through thought, not paper. Need a guide? With some coin you can net yourself one of the best guides in all the land. Naturally with our hunting we do make capable, even if not the best shots. Again, with some coin you can net yourself some good light infantry.

Code of the Coureurs
I. Live by nature, of the rivers and woods. Make it your home and know it intimately.
II. Knowing your home, it is a dangerous place. Don't knowingly leave fellow Coureurs in danger, and if possible stick together.
III. Yesterday's enemies may be tomorrow's allies. Don't needlessly fire at others or partake in brigandage unless you absolutely have too. If possible, aid others as well.

Ranking
  • Coureur des Bois: The Coureur des Bois are the leaders of the Coureurs. They're simply proven members of the Coureurs des Bois. The only reason the rank exists is to distinguish those of leadership ability, not for elitism.
  • Coureur: Coureurs are the members, and backbone of the Coureurs des Bois. They're all the same, however it is generally accepted that the most veteran (Time in group) Coureur is in charge.

Frédérique was born in Marseille, in French territory on what was commonly accepted as Wyandot territory. There were not many people living nearby, essentially only his family in a cabin, as well as some other cabins, making a small village. There was a Wyandot village nearby who the people of Marseille got along well with. Both of the communities traded very often, although some of the Wyandot saw it as mutual gift-giving.

Because of the territorial disputes with the British, Frédérique's family often were hassled by the British. He grew up learning to speak English well, but even to this day has a diminished opinion of the British. He grew up believing the only friends he had in this world were the French, the Indians, and the Spanish. These beliefs were affirmed and almost broken at multiple points of Frédérique's life.

As he grew up, he learned how to live off of the land and how to hunt. Learning both from his father, who was a fur trapper and his Wyandot friends who wanted to show him tricks. Although Frédérique was more interested, vastly more interested in exploration and cartography, little did he know he'd need these skills later in life.

That time did come, sooner than he wanted too. In his early twenties they were at war with the damn British. Filled with nationalist fervour, and contempt for the British, he joined the French colonial militia. They were organized into a Tirailleur/Chasseur, or otherwise light infantry unit due to their hunting experience. It was during this time he met François who had also joined the former militia.

After the war ended it became known as the French and Indian War. His belief in the Indians as their friends was reaffirmed, and the French to defend their own people at great cost. The Spanish, just sat on the sidelines and watch what he thought they considered brothers die. With the war over he needed to return to fur trapping, with his new-found and luckily survived friend, François, they decided to fur trap together.

They formed their own group of Coureurs des Bois. Continuing to do what they knew best, fur trapping and exploation. Eventually they'd find themselves commonly hired as guides so their business ventures also went in that direction.

-Founding: The Coureurs des Bois is founded after a discussion between François Baticle and Frédérique de Marseille.
-Exploratory Expeditions: Into the night the Coureurs des Bois took part in private expeditions all over the frontiers. It was during these very expeditions that the Coureurs started to feel for the forest and rivers. Eventually travelling became instinct to the Coureurs, and could travel to any location from anywhere on the map. Although it'd take time, and some weird pathing it was still much more efficient than the way Colonists traveled, with no sense of direction.
-Siege of East Point Fort: The Siege of East Point Fort started when a single native tribe war party consisting of three+ Indians attacked East Point Fort. The attack was sudden, quick and set casualties on both sides. The initial attack came from the rear, on the cliff face hanging above the river the arrows came fast, unexpected, and cover was hard to find due to the angle. One member of the Garrison died from the ambush. The Coureurs des Bois, although not a party, were caught in the middle as Frédérique was trying to strike up an arms deal at the fort. This was accepted, possibly begrudgingly, given the circumstances of the situation and Frédérique offered to help. The Indian, possible working in a two-man team was shot and killed.

A second attack came from the front, blocking the road, all visitors and supplies were blocked entrance. The garrison fought hard and the first casualty of this second assault was done by Frédérique, who fatally shot an Indian bowman. As if by sheer luck, Frédérique was able to send message to François Baticle requesting assistance. Frédérique, tired by the stalemate, decided to take matters into his own hands. He exited the fort and ambushed the last Indian and ran him down with his bayonet. Here he was surprised to find Francois attempting the same thing, but had beaten him to it and ended the Siege of East Point Fort.

The aftermath gave one casualty to the West Point Garrison, and three Indian casualties. There was a reprisal, a second ambush from the same cliff-face, but this resulted in no casualties for the garrison. The aftermath also led to the Rossiyska Imperiya accepting an alliance, effective arms trading, and granting of North Point Fort to the Coureurs by the Rossiyska.

-Exploratory Expeditions: This is the second private expedition that spanned all over the frontiers. It is during this expedition that refined the already made skills of travelling for the Coureurs. Now they could travel efficiently without such weird pathing and taking long routes or the occasional guesswork. Now they could truly be abandoned anywhere in the forest, and get to any requested settlement or abnormal feature of the landscape.

-Siege of Colonial Town:

-Browncoat Expedition to the North-Eastern Blackfoot Tribe: The Browncoat Expedition to the North-Eastern Blackfoot Tribe began after a long period of time of Indian raids, attacks, and robberies. Angered by the whole situation, Frédérique de Marseille demanded that a war party to be assembled, even if he had to lead them. This demand was met by massive popularity, although unknown it is estimated that over twenty colonists took up arms in a militia war party. It was now a punitive expedition to the North-Eastern Blackfoot Tribe.

As the only known person to know where the tribe was, due to his occupation as a Coureur des Bois, he led the expedition. Crossing the bridge in Colonial Settlement from the Logging Camp, they were beset upon by the Blackfoot Indians at the other side of the bridge! The town fell into a state of being a war-zone as possible as many as ten Indians attacked. Frédérique got a flanking plan by going around the fort to attack from behind, much like his plan at the Siege of East Point Fort. He sprang his plan into action after telling his comrades so he wouldn't be inadvertently shot while attacking from behind.

Frédérique ran out of the fort and swam across the river so he may get to the other side. Oddly he was greeted by a shirtless commoner, although rude he had more important matters to deal with! He ran into the fort from the path towards East Point Fort. Charging in to get to cover he shot one Indian with his blunderbuss. This marked the end of the attack, as apparently he apparently shot and killed an Indian trying to retreat before seeing him. After this the war party had to be assembled again, when it was a man by the name of Jahmaal was leading the group to the tribe.

On the way to the Indian tribe the war party had encountered the outlaw camp and on two separate occasions individual Indians. In the first occasion the Indian had gotten away by keeping distance and eventually running away. The second occasion, over an rocky arch over a river, acting as a bridge, the Indian was gunned down before being able to cross. Within a few minutes they finally reached the Indian tribal grounds. The war party charged forward, unleashing their muskets onto the walled village. The shots were met with no bodies.

The Indians charged out with their tomahawks and bows, slaying all in their path. Within minutes of the attack by the war party, they were in full retreat, the Indians were chasing them in the forest. Frédérique was a fast runner, he was able to outrun the Indian's and as he ran his view of them diminished as well as their chances of hitting him. Frédérique was able to shoot one Indian while running, an Indian on a horse as running through the cover of the trees he was surprised by him. Frédérique ran as fast as he could, he was not only hearing arrows but the Indians were picking up the muskets of the dead. As he ran he saw the problem, they didn't present their full force! Some colonists were still at the stone arch bridge....

Frédérique was able to meet up with two other survivors, there was no time to stop and reorganize or to exchange names, only time to run! Within minutes they were back at the Colonial Settlement, where they learned the grave truth. Out of the estimated 20+, the three of them were the sole survivors, less than a quarter of the force.

-West Point Fort-Colonial Settlement Convoy: The West Point Fort-Colonial Settlement Convoy began after the Coureurs des Bois found themselves in service of the Prussian Empire.

-Rumors!: There are rumors of a secret operation in the Coureurs des Bois, a gunrunning program by the name of Quick & Angry, or Q&A. The controversy stems from the secrecy of the program, and the supposed amorality of which hands the guns land in.

-War of the Coalition: The War of the Coalition's name arises from the fact that it was a war of two factions against one. The Highlanders and Great Britain declared war on the English Colonists. During the time the Coureurs des Bois owed their allegiance to the English Colonists, who were not only outnumbered and out-skilled, but the Coureurs were stuck in the whole conflict. The war seemed to be a definite victory for the Coalition, they had the soldiers, guns, uniformity, organization, and skill. However even in dire circumstances victory can be found.

The war effort seemed especially dire when there was a two-prong assault by the Highlanders from West-point and the British from east-point. The Coreurs des Bois were simply too little in number to fight openly in the field, and they weren't disciplined or organized enough to fire in lines. They shine best when shooting from the forest and showering the enemy in a slow, but constant fire of musketry (Or rifles).

This group is considered revived, the founding members (basically the only members) are back.

Frèdèrique de Marseilles has come back from the Ohio Valley, as well as François Baticle from the Louisiana territory.
