TLDR: Did the release of EA right at the time this whole pandemic started have a meaningful impact on how the game was received in such a mixed fashion?

It was a huge release at such a weird point in time leaving so many people so thankful that it came out when it did so we had time to appreciate it. Then many people like myself were able to put hundreds of hours in the first 2-3 months from being laid off. The first month I was so happy and gave a great review. It probably took me 60-100 hours to even realize what was placeholders in sp or to figure out basic mechanics that are never explained anywhere (like to advance cav to make them couch instead of charge took me 200 hrs before someone told me, same with archers... kill me now please)

Now that I'm back working I dont see why I would play this game. Played mp since beta and it's still the same with less bugs, at least at release I was able to play with a couple clans and force myself to enjoy it because there was enough people/hype to do so.

I think it's so hard to grasp how this game is doing and where it is going. How is a mount and blade game the biggest release of 2020 when it's by an indie Turkish developer? Was everyone looking for something, anything to grasp onto and this just came out at the right time?

I think I ruined this game for myself by playing too much when it's just a basic ea with minimal content and should have left it for 6 months before I reached the 100 hr mark in April and changed my review to negative.
Maybe the steam score is accurate and I'm just too critical of something that needs time.

Idk though what are other people's thoughts on the correlation between bannerlord and the old covid.

i think without the whole corona thing as a whole it would have been a lot more fun to come home and use the remaining time you have left during the day to play the game.

Maybe just me

I think your criticisms and dissatisfaction with the game are well justified. It should be obvious from the forums that may users have the same feeling of disappointment and missed opportunity.

I think your analysis of covid is on point too. I don't think they would've had as many sales as quickly if not for the virus. If it had gone the normal track, people would've been less inclined to buy the game and wait for reviews / gameplay videos to make a decision. Had people been able to see just how empty and linear the game actually is, I don't think it would've been such a huge EA release.

I used the extra Corona time to go from rudimentary drummer to kicka** drummer.

Bannerlord...im the same..

Maybe. I love this game. It was a wise investment. I actually bought a second copy and gifted it to my best friend. Full price. Worth every penny.

I forced myself not to play too much bannerlord to avoid exactly this problem. I think many people who were complaining on the forums just overused the parts of the game that were there. sure, the combat is nice and it is also a nice grafic but right now it is not very entertaining to play more then perhaps 1-2 hours a day for some time because many things are not there. But i hope that this will change in the future and then i can also start getting my 1k+ hours in the game:roll:

I actually waited about 2 months before I bought the game so that I could check it out first to see how it was. I'm not disappointed in the game because I knew what I was getting, and I found it on sale for $32.00.

It really had nothing to do with CoVid in my case. I work from home and really the only major effect CoVid has had on me is adjusting to wearing a mask when I go out. I mean that and the other societal changes, but my home life has been largely unaffected.

I saw mount&blade and I just jumped right on it. I read reports about bugs and such in the reviews but did not care. I got it knowing it will have a ton of issues but also knowing that it will eventually be very good and made even better by mods. I thought about VC and how much of a bust that was at release but how now it is the best iteration of mount&blade out there (and still at this time). I'm not disappointed in my purchase either. I got it to make sure I made a contribution to funding TW and seeing this game come to fruition.

That said, I have played games in EA and got bored of them and never actually went back to them at release, because the whole game just no longer interests me after all the time already invested. That hasn't happened with this game, but it would definitely be sad if it did. I can agree that those who are getting frustrated would be better served just checking for updates occasionally and coming back to it when it is more complete.

I am a bit disappointed with the late game as it is, but not about the purchase. I have faith they will make it better, but I don't really find it to be too terribly linear or with lack of things to do, at least in 1.4.3. I feel like the quests are balanced better to be more worth it so I actually do more of them in this version. And there are still many options for where you want to recruit and what sort of army you want to build. I keep changing how I play and trying new tactics and this also helps to keep things fresh. I do feel like it eventually becomes a grind though when you get into the kingdom politics and the like. There is definitely still work to be done in terms of performance from 1.4.3. But I'm interested to see how the next version looks with the changes to conversations on the map and like that will improve the pace. At this point I have seen BL evolve through many versions... it kind of feels like my little puppy and I'm watching it grow. Still needs some work on the house-breaking.

Any game that can give me 100+ hrs of entertainment is a success. Once the game is officially released and modding tools are out, I'll likely hit 1000+ hrs eventually.

Some people are simply too hard to please.

Not at all for myself, my job got quite a bit more busy. My plant makes ethanol, normally non-food-grade however with the pandemic hitting and a desperate need for hand sanitizer we made the needed adjustments to provide ethanol for hand sanitizers. That piled on top of operators needing to take 14 days off at any sign of a fever or cough and I've got a busy damn schedule, especially being the coverage guy. If anything I really wish I had more time, however I have some time at the end of this month to get some gaming in, possibly not bannerlord depending on it's state but we'll see!

Or perhaps you're too easy to please? I mean the game has massive short comings and fundamental design flaws. Which I guarantee you are aware of. Please don't act like the people who expected a better game are wrong or their criticism is misplaced.

Funny thing, I'm a big total war franchise fan. I've got multiple hundred hours in some of the worst ones (TOB ugghh) specifically because of how strategy type games are. Often having them open while building models, watching netflix, or working on something. So judging a game by hours invested is inherently flawed, especially in strategy games, even early access games like DayZ that are... terrible.. I've sunk dumb amounts of hours into that game and didn't really enjoy any of it beyond laughing at the ridiculousness of it with friends. On the other hand there's a ton of single player games that are easily under 80 hours of playtime that I still really love and rate verryy highly.

I think, simply, there's no arbitrary way to rate a gam with something like hours played.

Well said. Haven't spent that much time on any other title in a decade... And this is not even a finished game !

I've played and enjoyed Bannerlord enough to walk away happy. I'm waiting for a few updates before I return.

I never stopped working out of the house and continue to work, so COVID-19 had no affect on my freetime.

I'm well aware of the games shortcomings, I've pointed many out myself. That doesn't stop me from enjoying what there is to offer. I knew there would be a plethora of bugs and unfinished content coming into an EA game, I've played my fair share.

I get people had high expectations and I'm fine with them voicing their opinions, however when it turns into the whine-fest and ranting that this forum has degenerated into, I don't see how it helps the game. If you can provide criticism in a mature and informative manner, then the more the merrier.

This.

But you don't seem to ask yourselves the question: Why does it turn into a whine-fest and ranting?

Because TW doesn't seem to listen and communicate properly.
If there was proper communication and answers provided, then there would be less whining and complaining.

Lack of communication from TW is the cause and whining is the effect that follows.
Get rid of the whining by solving the problem, not by telling people to shut up.
