corona? :(

Some of them latched on to the sound bite, and they're convinced that it's fake, while most of the others think it's not in America and/or it's blown way out of proportion. My grandmother is blowing it off as a "God's Will" thing, so she doesn't care if she gets sick.

Stockholm alone had 18 deaths yesterday, the day before we had 40 deaths. My girlfriend lives in Stockholm so I'll be going from one risk zone to another. I rented out the student housing at the university for another two months, so in practice I have no place to stay as my mother is a hypochondriac and terrified of me rn. Maybe I will go to my cousins in Norway to isolate for two weeks. They have far fewer deaths and stricter measures.
My grandfather just died, and his symptoms matched the virus to the letter, but the hospital didn't have any tests to spare, and the they won't (or can't) do any posthumous testing. My grandmother was with him throughout his final hours, and they're doing a big funeral/family get-together because they all think the virus is a hoax. All of them are at least one part smoker/overweight/diabetic/old, so this has the potential to turn really grim really quick. I just hope my cousin doesn't show, as his special needs daughter will not survive if she catches it.

They're also pissed that my family won't be attending, but **** that. My sister had a bad recovery from a surgery, my mother has lung issues, and my niece has severe asthma. Even if it's a false alarm, we're staying in isolation until this simmers down.
My condolences, I hope you and your family won't be afflicted. Stay safe.

Edit: Boris Johnson tested positive.

Sweden is an interesting exception. While the rest of (mainly western) Europe have gone into lockdown
Sweden does very little - apart from no gatherings of more than 500 people.
Other than that everything is 'open', and people have been asked to isolate if they feel like it.
It even seemed like Löfven talked about the population building up natural immunity...

Boris Johnson still leading the country from video the next 14 days will be fun to watch.

I hope Sweden and any other countries not yet taking great measures wake up and recognise that it is not a good idea to wait until lots of people start coming into hospitals with it. We in the UK dragged our heels longer than most European countries, and we are regretting it somewhat. If we could go back two or even three months and take many of the measures we have done in the last few weeks (social distancing, good + frequent handwashing, closing schools etc.), I think we would.

Boris Johnson having it, wow...that's pretty disturbing, though rationally not surprising perhaps given that politicians and other high profile officials around the world have contracted it. I suppose they are often around other people, even if it is just security escorting them to and from the appropriate press conference locations. I hope he gets well soon!

I just spoke to my mother, and she said the same  I however have warmed to him, I am afraid to say, during this pandemic. That's not to say I would vote for him in future, but having recognised the need for action to deal with this crisis I think he reacted properly.

Reading news of China stopping curfews because the virus is declining. How exactly can they be sure that doing so wont cause it to come back? Since there is no vaccine, people who haven't had it yet are capable of getting it.

I spoke to my manager at the hospital, and she knows an epidemiologist who specialises in infectious outbreaks; they said that we will likely see declines and then increases in the total number of cases due to governments relaxing curfews and then reinstating them.

have you already forgotten the whole herd immunity nonsense he had going for a bit there?

he's changed his mind, but the delay will cost lives and that's on him.

It should be noted in my previous post that I meant that yesterday Stockholm had 18 deaths, whereas until then, we had only had 40 deaths in the whole country, not in one day but since it started.

And yes, Sweden's reaction to the pandemic is upsetting. Our health minister called Boris Johnson's flock immunity strategy "logical". Someone replace him before he reintroduces the Bubonic plague.

Yes, but as far as I know, he was going by advice given to him. If I have understood the news reports of the last month or so correctly, the danger of the virus wasn't universally appreciated by the medical profession and that included those people advising Boris early on, so I am reluctant to lay the blame for the delay at his door rather than that of the British Government or 'Establishment' as a whole. If he was taking advice of people like Dominic Cummings rather than actual medical professionals on the 'herd immunity' theory, then I stand corrected. I know that the WHO and lots of doctors in the UK rubbished that early plan, but my impression was that the 'herd immunity' idea was approved by some medical folk advising Boris.

NEWS:
Borris Johnson, MP of the United Kingdom, is infected:

900 Italy deaths in one day:

Over 3.6 million Americans file for unemployment:

MSNBC is now using Halloween music (and USA has more officially declared infections than any other country):

I just hope my cousin doesn't show, as his special needs daughter will not survive if she catches it.

If she's young, she might be alright (although obviously being special needs complicates it). We're at 1700 confirmed deaths in the US now, but children seem to be fairly immune to the worse symptoms.

Stats.

...The government said they want do for 300000 health care workers (only north Italy) a COVID test but specialized laboratories can do a maximum of 5000 tests per week so to have results for all it would take a month and a half...
...we don't have enough masks for all health care system (it would take 30 million A WEEK only for essential worker: doctors, police, ecc)...
...not enough breathe machines for intensive care patients so they have to send at home all no COVID, that one who have money to do that, for others they must take a choice as to who is more likely to survive...
...it's a completely mess and till now we talk only for the north side of the country...

Confirmed cases and deaths of corona has halved in Stockholm (the only place of an "outbreak" in Sweden) in the last 24h. Might be indicative of the recent laws put in place, including that of limiting social gatherings to a maximum of 50 people, might also be indicative of previous mindset of some that this is just a little flu that will be over in about a month's time.

Sounds positive! Here in the province North-Brabant, (Netherlands) the health care system is only just able to coop with the amount of people that are brought in. Especially the IC departments are having a rough time.
