That just upsets me that police now days think they have the right to do that to anyone.

I don't think the situation is any worse nowadays than it has been before. And these officers don't equal all the cops in the world, luckily.

Oh the hate that fills my soul for these people. I don't care how crazy and angry that man was, after the SECOND tasering any action taken against him is police brutality worthy of removal from the force and major jail time. The fact that it happened possibly over five times makes me want to personally extract a toll form each of them in the form of a beating equal to what they dealt that poor man.

I think sometimes a group of cops can go into chimpanzee mode. I don't really understand why police get so crazy when twenty policemen are pursuing one perpetrator and they look so hopped up on Adrenalin and they are screaming their heads off. I mean what the hell, it is twenty against one, calm down. I used to think that the Blues Brothers movie was an exaggeration when they showed an entire police force worth of police cars chasing one car loaded with two fleeing criminals but they really do it that way and yet when they bring their prey down they all act like they are storming the beaches of Normandy in WW2 and getting cut to ribbons. You signed up for this exciting profession so try to act like you can handle it without losing your mind.

Every time I hear some news like this, I can't help but wonder how in the world did these kind of people get to serve as a policeman. It should have been a very honorable job to do, but with the news of police abusing their authority or getting into some wrongdoings themselves being reported every now and then, even the credibility of the genuinely good police forces are affected. What is happening with the selection of cops these days? It seems the police forces are already infiltrated with scumbags like these that some of the good ones just quit their job, I guess that's the only option left if you want to save your integrity from the rotten system.

There are a LOT of police abuse already happening around that if every single incident was reported I bet it might rival that of the criminals. Sadly, some higher-ups prefer these kind of incidents to go unnoticed to save themselves of the criticism. Check out this news from Tennessee (F.B.I. investigates police beating Tennessee man), the sheriff didn't even think twice to speak in defense of the 4 police officers who beat a drunk man up!

It probably has to do with it being a position of power which makes it attract a certain kind of person who falls out as rather likable despite the fact you actually don't want them anywhere near the job.

Yup. Eventhough police academies might have psychological tests in the entrance exams, they're not foolproof. Therefore it's nearly impossible to prevent such incidents.

Umm less coffee? Hormone pills?

I'm pretty sure trying chemical mind control on your police force because a few psychopaths might've slipped through would end with all kinds of **** on the fan.

Okay so then just apply it to the ones who have completed the pyschological tests and seem that they may be unstable in some areas.

There are several forces at work:

One is Hyperions suggestion of power attracting those that intend to(or are prone to) abuse it.
A second is the soul-wrenching nature of police work. You spend your day dealing with the worst sorts of people who often get slaps on the wrist, mixed with distraught victims.
A third is the sense of brotherhood amoung the police, which I believe is a negative influence. Anywhere there is an "us" there is a "them." Unfortunately for police, their job encourages confrontation with those that are "them." This is also exemplary of the police versus abuse investigators, who are seen as anything from enemies of the brotherhood to meddlers, to carebears.

I would not put faith in a psych test. It could be perfect, but the psychologist likely works for the police, or a bureau that is not far dislocated from the police. The police themselves are on the side of the police keeping their jobs and being unfettered in the pursuit of "them."

The qualities that make a good productive officer are in direct conflict with the qualities that make a conscientious police officer.

Unfortunately the psychologist don't. THere is a lot to psychology, but in any profession, there are a great number of idiots.

If the doctor that graduated first in his class is called a valedictorian, what is the doctor that graduated last in his class called?

Doctor.

As someone who studies personality, it greatly depends on the person doing the examination. The tests themselves and the psychologist almost always fall woefully short of the theory that backs them.

Not if you have been wrongly accused of something and lose your eye. And think about what kind of responsibility you would be giving to the police, lawyers, judges and prosecutors. It just doesn't work. With such strict punishments, it would become too tempting to exploit the system.

Not to mention that nobody cares about the results. Unless you write there that you want to be a cop because assualting people sounds fun, you're in.
