Controversy and being Marshall

So im noticing this system is pretty horrendous right now, clearly not working the way its intended. In my current game ive been rimming King Harlaus for something like 500 days, hes in love with me. I have over a 1000 renown, and ive spent the entire game so far with my ****ty starter village that rakes in 200 denars a week. The only way to get given land is to have a low controversy, which means either not being marshall - or being marshall and doing a kick ass job (impossible). None of the lords respond to my summons anyway, and it rockets to 100 so quickly Im permanently excluded from any future fiefs.

So I think hey, ill be smart - take your marshallship and cram it. But no, that shoots my controversy up high as well (not sure by how much, but it seems to go to 100 all the damn time). This woudnt be so bad IF - and heres the game breaker, I didnt get offered the title every ****ing ten days.

Seriously, because the king loves me and because the kingdom is pretty ****ed, he tries to constantly make me marshall, I decline, it shoots my controversy to 100. If I accept I will fail because I cannot get new lands to pay for troops, and none of the nobles will follow me. Anyone else having this problem?

I am not sure, but i think that in patch 104 it is fixed that the lord folow you!
Also i am not an marshal yet, so i cant help. Try updating.

Im on steam, I think the game autoupdates itself.

Well thats good to know in the future, I just have to work off my controversy from 100 now so when I do lead a new campaign, I can get some goddamn land.

You may be caught in some kind of a vicious circle there, as it could be that your controversy has an effect on the Lords' willingness to follow you and/or accept you as their leader.

I've been marshal yesterday, with a controversy of 0, renown of about 600 and all the lords were eager to follow me. Whenever you successfully sieged a castle you can claim it as your reward. It all works a lot better since 1.104.

Heh it definately sounds like it. Do you know how much controversy you got if you let a village be raided or something similar? When I was marshall early on my controversy would still go sky high, simply because I could not protect the entire kingdom 24/7

I have to ask, actually; what exactly is the rationale behind raising controversy when you decline the marshalship?  Particularly since you can simply hunt down the king immediately after accepting the offer and resign for almost no controversy gain, if any.  It's irritating; if you don't want to become marshal because it's a thankless, hardluck black sheep job, you're forced to accept it and then hunt down the king, racking up whatever controversy results from the horrific violence being visited on the country in the meantime.

It doesn't help that declining the honor or resigning doesn't actually put you out of the running, either; you'd think that if you said no the first time, they'd stop asking you to step up to the plate.

(On a completely unrelated note, I'd recently captured Shariz and was waiting for the king to process my request for it when he asked me to become marshal instead.  I am in no way peeved about the results.)

P.S.  Well, upon reflection, I can kinda see the story-based rationale for raising controversy; since it's an election and approved by the king, declining the honor basically means you saying "No, screw you guys who voted for me AND your majesty, I think you made a bad choice."  It's still irritating from a gameplay perspective, though.

I'll find a different mechanism by which to defer the marshalship and fiefs, so that declining one does not affect the other.

Oh, sweet.  Rock on, Big N.

I don't suppose you have time to explain the original reasoning, though?  Just out of pure curiosity.

Is there no way of lowing controversy?
It is, but i dont know it there is something you do or something you dont do. I had 45 controversy one day and when i was checking after a week i had 38. All i did in that time was patrol (and fighting some lonely Sarranid and Khergit lords) around recent captured castles waiting for Harlaus to assign them to someone.

I was trying to avoid using an extra global variable, because they often cause bugs.

Needless to say, there was a flaw in my reasoning.

Does there have to be any punishment for politely declining marshalships or fiefs, though? I understand the rationale, that you're declining the honor and the king doesn't like it, but gameplay-wise I don't think it's something the player ought to be punished for.

how about just telling all the lords to ram it between their buttcheeks and become a masterless warlord? This way at least you get all the land and money for yerself.

Your sign explains it all

I sorted the problem by just quitting and rejoining my faction over and over, its a quick way to make the king not love you anymore. And if he doesnt like you, he wont offer to make you marshall every ten seconds, which is just lovely. Im enjoying my new castle and months of 0 controversy, I guess being a brown noser is a bad tactic right now.

well, look, I don't see why should I humiliate myself with kissing ass(especially on those bums the lords and kings) when the returns are simply crap(puns intended). Me vs. everyone is at least fun, plus it makes an excellent source of revenues and glory.

an excellent source of revenue? currently ownig land makes you loose money unless you have it tucked away ungarisoned.

I just gave up being marshall because the other lords told me that I had too much controversy to accept fiefs, despite capturing all the castles in 2 weeks that the braindead marshalls before me lost. Oh and when I resigned all of the castles I had captured got retaken because their owners left like a 10 person garrison and just left. :???:
