My Cornish King was torturing Saxons so he could collect from their lands, but I'm not sure it's worth it, and perhaps if one dies under torture, it might harm my reputation.
I know what you're saying. My reputation plummeted with every hot poker or beating, so I quickly abandoned this a viable way to get anything. I think it needs tweaking based on an overall tweak to reputation. IMO, we have to ask the fundamental question of "What is reputation?" then "Reputation with who?"
Let me illustrate with an example we have all faced.
Your kingdom "A" (as vassal or king no difference) is at war with Kingdom "B." You defeat and capture lord of Kingdom B while he is looting and burning your villages and:
a) release him knowing full well that as soon as he re-spawns he'll be back running around burning villages- (+ reputation) (+ relation with enemy)
b) Imprison him - (-rep and -rel with enemy) NO rel gain with YOUR kingdom or villages/commoner faction/religious faction
c) keep him imprisoned - (-rep and -rel with enemy lord and his kingdom every time event triggers) NO relation gain with YOUR kingdom or rep gain or villages/commoner faction/religious faction.
Now, the worse your relationship with the lord, the more of a "poison pill" the guy becomes, right?
In the real world his head would decorate your castle gate!!
Bottom line: the game rewards you punishing yourself. Well, that in a word is nerfed.
