I've been having this problem since replacing my MoBo recently. I kept the same CPU and added some RAM, but otherwise everything is the same as before, hardware wise. I have tried different vid drivers, a clean boot, msconfig to eliminate other software interference, event monitor shows nothing amiss at the time of freeze, just that the computer was shut down unexpectedly (I have to reboot after a freeze). There are no error messages. My comp is as follows:
Win 7 64bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
6GB ram
Asus MoBo model M3A with AMD 770 chipset (Before was a Gigabyte m57SLI-S4 with Nvidia nForce 570-SLI chipset)
Nvidia GeForce 8500GT 1GB graphics card with latest drivers
Most times the game gets to the overland map before freezing, occasionally I can play until I either open the inventory or encounter a bandit party, I even once played until level 2 before it crashed. There is never a problem during character generation.
Edit: The same problem happens with Warband and F&S
