I had lots of money and was going to just run some caravans, so I sent all of my companions to school at the same time. This was fine except that right before they graduated (with no notice), I got jumped by an enemy Army that had a lot of prisoners and I took them all in my army.
So, I'm maxed on my soldiers when all of my companions graduate and to make room for them, the game randomly fires entire groups of soldiers to make room. Of course they fire my mercenary camp mercenaries (all three times of them) and now they are all gone. I head back to hire some more and the captain at the merc camp tells me he's all out of guys.
So, word to the wise, leave room for your prima donna companions or you'll lose a lot of guys.
