Companion Heirarchy

Is there anyway to change the order of companions in the clan (“L” key) window? I can change the order in the party (“P” key) window but that doesn’t change the companion who enters town with me. The companion who enters town is always the first recruited companion, at the top of the clan window list.

You could always kick and rehire all companions above the one you want to enter town with you if you were that desperate. I know that's a pretty heavy handed approach and doesn't offer much flexibility; it's really just if you always prefer a single companion to follow you above all others.

Just be sure to unequip all of the expensive gear from the companions before you boot them or you will have to bear its cost when you rehire them.

Thanks. I thought of that but it is indeed heavy handed. It’s not a really big deal.

I believe you talk to them in town and say you no longer want them to follow you. Then find the person you want to follow you and ask them,

Have them form a party then instantly disband it until you have the companion you want to follow you right after your character. Costs nothing.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean, that doesn't seem to affect the order in which they appear on the clan menu at all.

What if you leave them in a town by pressing the plus button on the notables window? Then just leave and pick them back up.

I'm fairly certain forming a party and having them rejoin works but is more of a pain.

What Rektasaurus is saying is that the first companion on this list (found in the Members tab of the Clan Menu) is always the one who is initially following you when you enter a scene, assuming they are in-party:

That list seems to be exclusively controlled by the order in which you recruited your companions. It appears that nothing short of kicking companions from your clan and rehiring them allows you to reorder that list. As OP was saying, it's generally not much of an issue, but one example of where it might make a difference is if you hired a surgeon before a fighter and would rather have your fighter following you when you enter a scene.

It's true that your companions are all spread out around the settlement and you can always track down your preferred bodyguard, but that's just one more hoop to jump through each time you enter a scene.

Haven't tried it, but here's a thought. When you enter a town, you see the characters in the town on the top right screen. Beside that is a little "+" symbol. That let's you leave a companion in a town. Might be easier then firing/hiring them again. Let me know how it works.

Nope, unfortunately if you leave a higher listed companion in a town, then enter that same town, that companion will still be following you. So for instance, using my picture above, if I left Thaqir the Golden in the town before entering it, Thaqir would still be following me, not Ewyn. The only workaround would be to leave the top companion in a nearby settlement, go take care of business in the other settlement, then return to pick up the other companion on the way out.

I'm operating under the assumption that OP wants to have those companions in party with them, not left behind while they go off elsewhere.

As I stated earlier you can ask the companion to stop following you. Then go to where ever the person you want to follow you is and ask them to follow you.

Yep, that's always an option if you don't mind the hike to go collect the companion you want every time.

Yeah it seems the only way to change the first companion is to rearrange by kicking and rehiring. This is not optimal. Dragging and dropping should change the order in all 4 screens, inventory, character, party, and clan.
