Commanding tips

Well. It depends on what types and amounts of troops you have (can't do some things with only 2 knights).

I find, in battle (size 100), when i have a good mix of mounted, foot and archer troops, that i like to tell my archers to hold position, then move my infantay a small distance in from (about 10 meters). this will stop foot troops and cavalry getting to your archers. then i usually ride around to the side with my cavalry, and charge back in when the melee begins, or if i'm on foot, i stay with my foot troops (usually leading the charge.)

when you don't have any mounted troops, and the enemy has cavalry, try to get to a hill and/or some rocks and tree's as cover. these stop the horses, alowing you to attack them (they don't stop otherwise...) tell all of your troops (arhcer and foot) to hold position, and wait for the enemy to come to you (at least there's not defenciv battles)

For all cavalry, just charge 'em down, perhaps go around to the enemy archers yourself while your at it

just rember it's f1, f2 ect. to select the types of troops you wan't to give the order to, and 1-5 to select the order (just go to options and look at the controols, i can't rember off hand which one is which)

To answer a question you might ask, you need battlesize changer mod to get battle size past 40.

Hugglez!

There are TONS of commanding tips around this forum, just use the search function and you can find a lot of them.

Alright, ever play any Medieval strategy games or maybe Rome: Total War? Imagine that, only small scale. If you have a mix of cavalry, footmen, and archers, first, go to a hill or something high and order your archers to hold position there. Then, tell your cavalry to follow you. Go around back and flank the enemy from behind with your cavalry while your infantry takes them from the front.

If you have infantry whilst they have cavalry, like we said, get on a hill and pray to God there are enough spearmen in your group.
If there aren't many hills, get right on the other bank of a river. The horsemen are dead men riding while they cross it, especially if you have archers.

Archers are the worst against cavalry, that's probably what you would want to take out first with your cavalry. They move so quickly that they probably won't get a shot on you, that's why they suck so badly against horsemen.

If they have a ton of infantry and you have a lot of cavalry, they probably win, UNLESS you have Vaegir horsemen. They aren't armored very well and if the infantry is thickly packed enough, your cavalry will die, probably one-by-one. I'm sorry, but I just think Vaegir sucks, overall. Really. If you have Swadian men-at-arms, however, they have good armor, and they'll take out the infantry just fine.

Mixed-forces are best. They often don't need much leadership at all. The cav charges, hits the enemy cav. The infantry stay in front of the archers. The problem is trying to keep units in reasonable clumps, which are effective, rather than spreading out. There really doesn't seem to be a great method of doing this. You can try and order them to follow you, but then you become almost useless, surrounded by your own men. I judiciously use 'follow me' to try and keep them from doing idiotic things (like advancing into a river when I know the enemy will charge anyway), or to regroup, but otherwise I leave them to their own devices. If they act too annoying, I kill them and eat them, in the hopes that the rest will learn.

In a sense, any commands that you give are a form of 'exploiting' the AI, or the odd situation of the walled battlefield. Not that this is an argument against using them, more a request for more reasonable AI default tactics.

Now I only need Attack orders to make tactics nearly complete! (order cavalry to attack archers, order archers to attack infantry, etc)
