Combat Nearly Impossible

Hello, as you all know as you level up the quantity of enemies increases to stay on par with your abilities so the game will always remain challanging, but I've noticed one major flaw (either on my part or the game itself)

I am currently a level 18 (I chose squire) with a full army of 23 people myself included. Earlier on in the game I noticed it was actually quite easy for me to annihilate my enemies but as I leveled up this has become quite harder and harder to the point where I'm running from every enemy I encounter with numbers ranging from 33-130. Is this only going to get worse and worse or did I invest my skill points into something completely useless and should stock up on CAR and Leadership?

What did you invest your skill points in? Even if you don't have ridiculous fighting skills you should be pretty kick-ass if you fight alongside your men.

What kind of troops have you got? If it's mostly caravan guards and militia men you're in trouble..

And finally, pick your battles :) You're a despicable mercenary, don't fight anyone unless you outnumber them, or jump in to ongoing battles so you can use troops that aren't your own as meatshields :) It always amazes me that they actually listen to my orders..

Avoid fighting anything that says 'dark' until you have mercenaries at least. + 23 men is pretty basic. Try and make a larger band. And for last, solo fighting is fun but dangerous, allow your men to earn their pay.

Either you're pretty bad skill-wise (as in, personal mouse-moving skills, reflexes, etc.), no offense, or your army is the suck.
Here's a few tactics that could help:

- If you have a lot of archers, but nothing else, stay on the defensive. If there's a cozy valley in the mountains where there's only, like, two enterances where only two people can trickle through at a time, you can survive a VERY long time with a squad of archers. I did this myself on the LotR mod, had like, eight Skirmishers of Rohan on the field (literally, there weren't many), and the Uruk-hai slowly... ever so slowly... trickled in. Mind you, my total party consisted of about 17, whilst the Isengard patrol had about 56. I held out until finally the archers slowly started to die off one by one (they were also very good close combat fighters, for some reason), but then a new squad simply popped in. Remember to make a dismount order if you have horse-archers.

-If you have a bunch of foot archers and they have cavalry, you're in a tough jam. I won't give you another hero story, but try to get to a high place. The steeper the way up the hill, the better. Hold position and shoot them all.

-If you have infantry, they can usually beat cavalry, unless it's one of those insane groups of 30 dark knights/hunters. Due to the stupid AI of the cavalry, they ride right through the middle of the infantry squad, thus making their horses rear, and getting a huge swarm of steel. Keep your infantry packed close together versus cavalry, the "follow me" order usually works wonders.

-If you have cavalry, and they have infantry, try to lure the infantry in many directions. You can hold your army behind a hill or something, then try to scatter them, or turn their backs. Push "charge", and if done correctly, your biscuts should be a golden brown - I mean, they should be really dead.

-If it's a foot-war on archers versus infantry... then you better hope your army has shields, otherwise, not much else you can do.

-A good any-situation tactic where the enemy will generally own your ass is to turn their backs towards the assault, then push charge.

-While charging with infantrymen, you should use "follow me", then when you get close to the enemy army, push charge after stopping for a few seconds. This helps everyone keep close together so they all don't go two-by-two or something and get slowly destroyed.

Change the battle slider to minimum. Makes things a lot easier since you'll rarely face more than 5 or so of their units at a time (note : the same goes for your army).

Learn to use the orders system. Ordering a hold ground at the start of the battle is usually a good idea. Most of the enemy will follow you, so ride off and kill a few opponents. If things start getting tricky, lead them back to your troops and order the charge. Against cavalry this can be a killer, since they'll ride individually into the center of your mass of troops, and be quickly butchered.

Picking your fights helps too. Avoid large numbers of Swadian crossbowmen, unless you're insane.

Remember you can leave the battle if you need to. As long as there are no enemies close to your character you can retreat. You can use this to perform hit and run attacks to whittle down the enemy numbers. Ride in, kill off a few opponents then retreat. Rinse and repeat.

Try to keep your troops alive long enough to promote. Better quality troops will generally do better than the lower quality ones.

I'm a level 16 with 37 men in my army, and we aren't seeing many armies as big as the ones you claim to be seeing. Perhaps you are seeing the same few armies over and over again? Try traveling to a different location on the map, and make a new area your home for a while. I've noticed that out in the snow and desert regions I have been seeing large armies of deserters, so I have made a conscious effort to avoid those areas. Instead I lurk near the mountains and forrests, looking for bandits and the like.

And perhaps your game is on a higher difficulty? I hardly ever recall seeing an army over 60 or so.

Yes. The very highest I've seen in a war party is 95... I've only seen above 100 in the LotR mod. But then again, I did take a break for a few updates.

There was 100+ rescued prisoners running around after I executed the dark knights holding them prisoner (they seem to attack refugees, farmers and me, nowt else).

I've seen Sea Raider war parties and Khergit hordes of upwards of 150 in the Mag7 mod. I did a lot of running away in Mag7.

Not only that, but the size of each party type has its own cap. River pirates never exceed 30 in number, and mountain/forest bandits never exceed 60, etc. War parties CAN get really huge, and i've seen some with well over 100, although its pretty rare. So whatyou may need to do is just lower the difficulty a bit until you get the feel for the game. Either that, or upgrade your troops to knights, they're the most powerful troop type. Goodluck!

30ish is a good number of knights, you can take on a much larger force assuming they don't have a comparable number of horsemen to overpower you. I personally like having a really high leadership skill, but then I also like having my battle size set at 200 (modded) to make things interesting. Just make sure you go after prisoner trains so you can keep your army full without having to resort to peasants and footmen from the taverns.

I wonder if there's a limit above the normal cap? For example I've seen plenty of bandit 'hordes' with say 60 bandits, 7 knights, 15 horsemen etc. after they've taken out a prisoner train or whatever.

Although it's nice of the bandits to be bringing together Vaegir and Swadian troops in the spirit of brotherhood, peace, and the kicking of ****.

Largest party I've seen is a 380+ rescued prisoners. All the badies were running away from them. Talk about sheep chasing the wolves.

Make sure you put a couple points into surgery so that more of your followers get knocked unconcious instead of killed, you can also try retreating if you are attacked by a group of darkhunters. During the battle try t get some distance between you and the enemy and hit the tab key, if you are far enough away you get the option to retreat. When the option screen pops up you get an option that says "send your men into battle while you stay back." or something similar, click on that and you will probably lose a couple more guys but you might be able to run to a town. Sometimes your weak men will kill a few too which is funny. It doesn't pay to do that a lot but it is fun and can save you once in awhile when you are delivering ale or something.<edit> Oh yeah, if you get the ransom girl quest tell the bandits that you won't pay because you can get a mini-war out of it if you aren't strong enough to defeat them in one battle. Just run off to the nearby town, rest up and hire some new cannon fodder and attack them again. I did this today and after about three days (gametime) I got their loot and rescued the girl too. I had to send Marnid to the Four Winds Inn to open up a slot for her though, but I picked him up again with no glitches. On a side note I love the look of the Inn buildings but as a friendly criticism from a guy who builds stuff, the ground under and surrounding any house would be levelled first. Even back then.

Now that would've been a sight to see.

That will take a while to kill, even with the battle-size mod, actually, you may have to stop at 2500 for lunch and come back later for the rest...
