Think of Real-Time-Strategy games where you hotkey units into groups.
Having the ability to make eleven (F1 - F12 with a "Select ALL") combat groups before combat, I think would add a lot to the level of control over your men.

In the party screen there could be 11 slots. Moving men into a slot puts them into that Combat group which can be selected during battle with the alloted hotkey. The ability to rename the combat group so that the group name appears when you select it during battle would also clear a lot of confusion.

So instead of ordering ALL of your calvary to dismount or ALL of your Infantry to charge, you could do: "Bodyguards" - Follow me, "Marnid and Fodder" - Charge, "Heavy Calvary" - Dismount, "Light Calvary" - Go here, "Heavy Infantry" - Stay here, "Borcha's Group" - Move here, etc...

Of course, if you wanted to revert back to the old grouping system, name 3 groups as Infantry, Calvary, and Archers and put the men into their respective slots.

Check my "In-game Tactical Depth" thread, it's got a link inside to a thread on cohorts ^^
Basically what you suggested.
