Combat feels a bit sluggish and we need a sprint button

I have a few suggestions

- The swing times of weapons feels sluggish, is slower than irl speeds and should be buffed

- you should be able to sprint, including when on horseback as this would make things more realistic and more immersive

- your starting accuracy with bows on horseback is too low, especially when you’re not even moving which makes levelling up archery a pain

- there should be an option that makes weapon damage more realistic. Right now you need to land like 3 arrows with a steppe composite bow or 2/3 swings with a sword to kill someone who’s unarmoured which feels off. Also this coupled with the slow swing speeds means that engagements are determined to too great an extent by numbers and the equipment the people carry and skill has too little bearing on the outcome

If you speed up swings, you won't be able to block without a shield because a split second is required to determine which direction a swing is coming from so the right block direction can be determined and executed.

Some kind of limited sprint capability would feel good. I don't know how much I'll appreciate my opponents sprinting away from me when they are running, but overall it would make mobility more dynamic.

I don't see a problem with horseback archery. It is already conceptually strong and the penalties to accuracy are both realistic and necessary for balance. Maybe the accuracy when standing still on horseback could be a little tighter, but it should never be as good as standing still on the ground.

Lethality in combat seems about right to me on the Realistic settings. You can one hit kill unarmoured enemies with a heavy weapon strike to the head (including high tier ranged weapons, or any javelin lol). Most other situations should take more than one hit.

You can already gallop your horse if you double tap w button, you only need a better horse to do that than your starting one.

I also feel that blocking with two handed weapons could do with a bit of revising. Like for example swinging from right to left whilst holding block could make you swing your sword/axe whatever from right to left in a defensive manner to block swings from that side. A change like that would make the combat more immersive and also allow players to react more quickly to attacks, which in turn would also facilitate a small increase in swing speeds

To expand on using bows on horseback, i think it’d be awesome if they made timing your shots more important and increased the skill gap, allowing more skilled players a greater degree of accuracy whilst increasing the penalty for mistiming shots.
Mongol and Hun horse archers were taught to loose their arrows when all four hooves of their horse were off the ground and the horse was at the peak of its arc [i’m not an equestrian and don’t know the right words to use here lol but if you’re curious it’s worth googling] because that’s the moment when they’re the most stable, allowing them to be as accurate as they could be.
I would love to see a system like that in-game.
I agree that shooting whilst moving on horseback shouldn’t be as accurate as if you were stand still with your feet on the ground but atm the combat feels too level dependent imo which stifles the gameplay and frankly in the early game combat is a grind imo

Ah thank you. That’s a ridiculous rule

anyway it’d still be nice if you could sprint whilst on foot. Not only does it not make sense that you’re the only one on the battlefield who can’t sprint but it makes battles less dynamic than they otherwise would be

What is your athletics and specific weapon skill at. I find that once its up past 100, the speed of the game and fights are much more dynamic.

I pretty much just started. My athletics and weapon skills are all sub 25 and tbh with the combat the way it is atm I cba to play. The battles just bore me and I’m not in a position to even sample the management side of the game yet. Rn playing’s just grinding levels. I wish the devs would make the combat more skill based and less about what level you are. Level locking weapons and armour really doesn’t help either

I understand how you're feeling, early is slow as fuuu. I honestly play with mods to give like 5x the experience to hurry up with the leveling. Because the game revolves around your troops, more than the your character. But being the weakest link of your army is pretty whack. My opinion if you trying to get to the deeper level of combat. Use some mods.

I use mods with all the other PC games I play but when I checked steam to see if Bannerlord had a workshop I couldn’t find one

where dyou get your mods from?

Steam Workshop support hasn't been implemented yet, it will come later.

Most people get their Bannerlord mods from Nexus Mods currently. I've used the site for other games, but I haven't used any mods with Bannerlord yet.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help!

@mf shro0m , for what concerns archery upgrading to a bow with better accuracy will also do wonders. Reading what you wrote it sounds like you are using the starter bow that has accuracy below 90, upgrade to something with >90 accuracy and things will get a bit easier.

i dont understand why so many people want to have a sprint button? that makes for me no sense, because:

a) you normally have heavy armor and endurance in real battle would be so fast down, that you wont even have the power to get your weapon up
b) if you have a endurance bar, it should fill up very very slow, because of the heavy equipment most people use.

so in my opinion, it wont fit in any way in bannerlord.
i think you all havnt played warband or other M&B and it never bothered me that there is no sprint button.

The game just needs a good guide on "running speed" which consist of "Athletic" skill and equipment weight. A lot of new players i assume don't understand the early game mechanics and probably think slow tanky running is the whole basis of the game. just my guess.
