Resolved Cloned NPC companion

I accepted a "Needs help with Outlaws" Quest and when given the option chose to assign the quests completion to a NPC Companion in my Party (Helmold OTH). I gave him a full group of 17 men and left him to deal with the required 8 bandit parties. Obviously my Companion was keen to impress as he only needed 5 of the given 17 days before a Notification appeared stating he had completed his task. 2 days later I found my NPC Companion in the Tavern of one of my cities (Poros). He was alone (my 17 men assigned not with him) but I told him to rejoin my party and he did.
The Quest however, remained active and continued to count down the days. The day before the Quest was due to expire, I received a quest Complete Message, the reward money and the 17 men I assigned back, along with a Clone of the NPC Companion I assigned the quest to.

So who is this imposter? I cant tell now as I have 2 of the same Character in my party. My Clan Screen only shows 1 of the NPC in my Party, but I can now select the NPC in my Party list and there now shows 2 numbered and a +/- option just like other regular units.

Summary:
How to Reproduce: Accept a "Needs help with Outlaws" quest and choose to use a Companion to complete instead of yourself. Collect companion from your city when notification of completion is given. When quest time is due to expire all units assigned to quest will return along with a 'Clone' of the assigned NPC Companion.
