Regarding the Fyrd, I've been doing some reading and it seems it was indeed made up of well equipped professionals as Eadric mentioned.

It seems the term "Fyrd" has become mixed up (at least to amateurs like me) with the King's more general call-up of the lower class levies which was the "Folc"?
