Can you kill the king and claim his kingdom as your own ???

No, but you can start your own kingdom.

I believe there's been some talk about modding the ability to permanently kill lords, but I'm not sure if that ever took off.

You would have to create new lords each time after the dead ones left; otherwise there wouldn't be any lords after you killed them all. Starting your own kingdom is one of the best ways to play Lords and Realms!
