Civil and military service

Some ideas I was thinking about...

Much like how the game is now, you should be able to advance in military rank for completing missions. You should also be able to gain points towards advancement for independent heroic actions, though, such as ransacking enemy caravans or defeating an enemy war party. Moreover, advancement should be slow, but the rewards should increase exponentially... A great general should be able to pay for his entire army with his weekly wages.

Similar to this, perhaps there could be some non-combat related missions for merchants and traders to to accomplish, and they're granted posts in the royal court.

Also, perhaps after a particularly heroic deed or a lengthy period of faithful service, you could be granted some kind of noble title, along with lands and subjects of your own that generate income and soldiers.

Do you mean missions like the current "delivery" merchant missions?

(Still, though, without some kind of protection, deliveries run the risk of getting stolen by bandits.)

Indeed, though the variety of such missions should be vastly expanded so that non-combat-type characters don't become royal couriers.

And the bandits, of course, are why a merchant character should always hire escorts.

Here's a merchant's tip: if you're carying a boat load of goods, and yourcharacter who is normally capable of speds of 11.5 is going at 6.4, hire a peasant or farmer or something. Just one. If you get approached by khergits or dark hunters, and they catch up to you, order your one lone farmer to fight. After the fight is finished and he's been stuck full of steel, you have the option to leave battle. This is generally all you need to do to gain enough breathing space to reach the next town, since NPC's have a tendancy to remain still for a small while after you talk to them.

Of course, if you're in the middle of nowhere, like between jelkala and Srgoth, you're kinda screwed if one of these guys follows you.

Loved the ideas as do many others who've suggested them previously.
