City Ambushes

The Elusive Mr. Hunt

Knight at Arms
Does anyone know if there's any point to them? At first I suspected it was a Lord I rubbed up the wrong way, but then I started a new game and was getting them before anyone really knew I existed, nevermind had a feud with me. So are they just random ambushes, or do you eventually find out who's organising them?

its just random encounters I think, never heard any more about them. Happens often if you try to enter the marketplace or tavern in the middle of the night or if you try to recruit in the night.

They're random encounters at night, and happens in villages too (though possibly less often).  If you can't reach a town before nightfall, you should either sleep outside or make sure you're entering with a good sword and a shield.  I once entered with a jousting lance - terrible idea.

Yeah, that cant have been too much fun...

They're hardly difficult though. Max is around 4 bandits, but generally I end up fighting two straight away, and then the archer is in the other end of town, and I have to find him myself.

Yeah, but it is bottersome when I go to a village and suddenly I am "ambushed" by 7 forest bandits. By "ambushed" I mean, there are 7 guys lined in front of me, all with bows in hand and I am in the meedle of the street and I don't even start with my weapons in my hand. It's almost as if I was meant to be executed...

I've had up to eight in the village encounters. Seems they increase in proportion to your level.

Ive never had a village encounter, so it may just be there are more in the village.

Also, why is it that as the leader of your warband, you always feel the need to scout ahead, alone, of all your men upon entering towns/villages?

I have had a LOT of them.

When you play for a long time you notice them a lot, and they only (or mostly) happens at night when it says no one is outside.

I think it happens more in villages if you have a low rating with that village.

If you look in TheMageLord's Compilation of 82 tweaks (sticky thread at the top of the Zendar Town Square) you will find that the ambush by bandits is a random 'quest' that can occur on a regular basis, and using the tweak you can increase or decrease how often it happens. It has nothing to do with your popularity with the village or any Lord, it is part of the 'gameplay' written into the game.

They mostly come at night, mostly...

Sorry couldn't resist quoting that classic film.

Yeah I really like it when you get attacked by bandits I just wish it was harder. It's hard when you first start off I guess but I'm about level 23 or something now and I just kill everyone really easy. I could increase the combat AI I guess, think I have it on normal.

It would be cool if an assassin was after you or something, be a bit like The Witcher.

I used to hate these but now I actually try to run into them. You get a little bit of money and experience. Too bad you can't capture them by wounding them.

How hard they are depends on the character I play.
When I play a melee monster in heavy armor they wind up dead very fast, when I play a leader with low strength (and armor) it becomes dangerous depending on the map and I survive only by my skill.

Hmm... that's an interesting way to play, not really engaging in combat, maybe shooting a few bolts at the enemy. Good for the RPG point of view.

When I play that way I usually stay in the back and coordinate the infantry and archers - that or I lead the cavalry in a flanking movement but in both cases I don't engage in a lot of combat. I still train my weaponcraft in the arena though.

Sounds fun. The only disadvantage I can think of, is that you're not leveling fast enough without the xp of "frags".

I don't know about "fast enough", lets just say it's slower
