This cold night will turn us all to fools and madmen.
King Lear, p46
The travelling circus of Bint came to stop for the night, just like they had done so for the past week. The punters were too few in this area to warrant an overnight stop in the town itself, so the circus, as fate had decided, came to stop by the tower.
Now, it wasn’t one of those towers that had been shrouded in mystery for over a thousand years, oh no. It was abandoned by the Calastrati family over a year ago, due to falling into disrepair. And that’s it. No ghosts, no werewolves, nothing of the sort. They packed up in the morning, and continued their journey.
Nah, just kidding. That place was ****ed up.
The aurochs were bedded down for the night, the elephants had been fed. Locke, the gamekeeper, was settling down for the night. All was quiet for the first time in weeks, the circus could rest; the circus could stop.
However, with all great things, come great secrets. The Ringmaster was a troubled man. Staying up throughout the night, watching whoever was on at the time performing. Criticising their every move, watching for any mistake they make, and coming down on them, hard. Eventually, most of the crew became tired of his criticisms; angry that they had to adjust to his advice, whether it was useful to them or not. And that’s when he snapped, too. The circus was good enough, always falling behind the others. According to him, at least.
And that’s when it went wrong. Things had been unsettled for a while, due to the Ringmaster’s criticisms. The Ballet instructor of the Circus, Vilhjalmr was suffering particularly under the Ringmaster’s reign. So, one day, he snapped. Took a tire iron from the main cart’s toolbox, and simply waited until nightfall. It should’ve been so simple. No one was there to stop him as they all wanted him dead, so what was the problem?
Well…
Nobody knows. The frilly tutu, fluttering in the wind, told the rest of the circus all they needed to know. The body gave a pretty good account, but there was no real way of knowing what had done such unspeakable things to the body. “My rules.”, had been daubed in blood across the wall where Vilhjalmr’s corpse lay, and a single smiley face carved into his chest.
Oh, and a pie dish that had burned a way through the wall.
“Who would do such a thing?!” warbled AWdeV, the circus butcher. “Everybody loved our effeminate redhead! Even the ringmaster! He just had his way of telling him!”
“Who cares,” replied Adaham, the cart porter, “Something’s out there, we need to head for the tower. Any delay could cost us more lives; we’re running out of time.
“Can I make a suggestion?” Said Orj, the assistant porter. “I think we-
Orj paused, a twisted grimace gracing his face. Gasping, he slumped to the floor, revealing the sad, sad face of a grinning clown, empty pie dish in hand. Two of them, crouching down by the mules, with an old lady supporting herself against a trolley.
“Run! Run away!”
They took shelter in the tower, but no one had any idea whether the villains made it in with them. They barred the doors, of course, but of course, that meant they couldn’t get out. And where was the Ringmaster?
