Choosing a character befrore battle: playing a companion in a battle

It would be fun and helpful to be able to choose right before a battle which character we would like to control during a battle.

It would help to level up companions and be fun to play one battle as your companion-archer, next as companion-infantry and other as player.

An issue could be then who controls and orders your army? Would you be willing to have an AI plays your character and order formations for your armies?

Wouldn't your companions command for you then? I imagined when you got really powerful and so did your companions, you could promote them to being a general or something similar and have them fight your battles for you.
