Character Classes

Knight at Arms
Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed, I have searched the forums but have not found anything on this (although I was overwhelmed by the amount that came back).

My suggestion would be to increase/improve character class generation into a class system, for example (although this has not been fully thought out yet): -

Peasant
Skilled Person
Merchant class
Academic
Nobility

Dending on the difficulty level chosen, would depend on which class level you started at. Within each of the class levels there would be a number of career paths to follow eg: -

Skilled Person

Hunter/Archer
Blacksmith
Halberdier
Novice
(the list is not exhaustive)

To progress to the next class level you must either have accumulated a certain amount of wealth or become sufficiently skilled in a certain area, or for progression to nobility, to have carried out a difficult quest for a lord or king.

This could also be tied into equipment that is available and which merchants will trade with you, as well as the type of quests you can carry out.

Views? I will be adding more to it unless somebody can point me in the right location for a similar post.

Cheers

well, titles have already been discussed, and if i may say so, i m not too fond of the idea of giving classes more influence.

heck, i have been a crossbow-using priest (or was it monk? what the hell) and if i get bored by headshots, it's good to know i can just grab the next axe lying around and (if i'm strong enough) wield it like hell.

guess it was quite intended for the class system only to give you a starter bonus to the playing style of your choice, and i would like to have it stay that way 8)

--> action ++

I know some people will feel that way, its just that I am a big fan of both computer RPG's and paper based ones where this can happen. I'd appreciate other views as well. I have looked for a game along these lines but have yet to find one, at least one where it is more 'realistic', ie, not a kill the goblins type game.

I think that the class types in this game gives equal zero sence as a merchant i dont think you should be able to charge forward and slay a whole bunch of enemies as easy as a squire can, what i mean is, if you have skill, then class doen'st matter.. Okay there's a few differences in skill point, but no penalties or gains ..

classes are nice for many games - especially rpg's where this easily counters the platemail sorcerer tank concept, or on mmorpg's where it adds more atmosphere.

however this game is very unique as (for me) it aims to be a realistic medieval rpg's, and as such i like to shape my character as i see fit.

I appreciate this game is unique, however I would like a class system. Even if it is not as rigid as I originally suggested. I know you start out as a squire, etc, but what if you don't join the swadians or vaegirs, you would have no further rank. Even if it wasn't an actual rank but possibily your status in the eyes of the public (ie unknown, famous, hated, etc).
