It pains me to say it, but one thing I think that would increase the challenge would be to put a limit on how many of your troops can become elites at a given time.  Having a hundred man army consisting of Swadian Knights and Nord Huskarls, while entertaining, is a bit overpowering in my opinion.

I think this could be linked to the Leadership skill, higher levels increase the limit of units that can be top tier, by about 5% or so, having the default at something like 20% would be a good place to start this, I think.

Thoughts?

I think, that it's a good idea. Would it affect AI lords too? Because most of them, have at least 6 points in leadership, while kings have 9. It'd mean, that king can(but not must) have up to 65% of top tier units in his 300+ party. While(dunno if it works) they(kings) have 9 in training. That'd be pretty bad, don't you think?

I had this idea with the intention of leveling the playing field, since most lord partys' already have a decent range of units from recruits to elites.

As for the king, well, It's good to be the king, am I right?

I don't think it's good to set arbitrary limits for stuff like that. Maybe it should just be harder to level your guys up?

Then why have a party cap to begin with?  Granted, unit leveling could use some work as well.

A party limit makes sense, so that lower level players can't gather huge armies. Imposing other limits within that limit is just stupid. If I can afford 60 huscarls, why should I not get 60 huscarls? It would be better if higher tier units had higher wages, or were harder to obtain. Imposing hard limits without reason just takes the fun out of a game.

Alright, lets look at it in this perspective:

You are currently level 15, which would be more likely to take your orders, the level 1 farmers, or the level 30 knights?

And realistically, when do you ever see an army purely consisting of elites, and no grunt level shock troops?

Shouldnt be linked to something IMO, its already a ***** to play a fighter character when you just lead twice more men and send them to battle.

They would listen if you were paying them.
It's not good to set arbitrary hard limits on the player. Why not just increase the wages of higher tier troops? It has the same effect but doesn't snatch things away from the player.

Alright, I'll concede from the limiting of elites, but:

You have a slight contradiction right there, if you can afford 60 Huscarls, why can't you have 200 farmers, if they cost about the same?

Because you don't have the leadership or administrative skills to control 200 men. You're not even listening to what I'm saying here.

Especially farmers who are about as disciplined as a bunch of kids military-wise. You would have a lot less difficulties commanding 200 huskarl/knights/sergeant/any trained soldiers than you would have trying to lead the same amount of farmers.
