Caravan of Courage

Out of Character Thread

Concept:

We're going back to the basics as it were, a simple, small party play-by-post RP based in a setting that we are all hopefully rather familiar with (Mount and Blade: Warband, yo). Less of a focus on the perfect posts (a posted post is better than the most perfect of posts that remains on unposted), but rather on having some fun and developing a nice story.

No grand armies, no endlessly confusing plots, and instead a humble start, wherein our heroes are tasked with the most basic and familiar of tasks from the very game that spawned this forum...escorting a caravan.

Notes: Blame Gammagirl for the title, it's all on hen.

~ Your humble language dictator,
Úlf

Rules:

 • Before posting in the IC thread you must post a completed character sheet in the OOC, receive approval from both the GM(s) and a majority of active players must cast a vote in your favor in the super secret votes that will be conducted
 • No Powergaming (try to role-play in a balanced and reasonable manner)
 • No Mary Sues or Gary Stus (characters so perfect they easily overcome any and all obstacles)
 • Out of Character information should not be used In Character (unless something has been revealed in character, your character should not be aware of it)
 • Don't take control over another player's character without their permission
 • Try to approach combat and battles in a realistic or at least believable manner
 • No one word or one sentence posts (one paragraph is encouraged as an absolute minimum).
 • Collaboration between players (using things like Google Docs or TitanPad) is strongly encouraged!

General Information:

Current Events: WIP

Huge Map of Calradia

Useful Lore Info: Mount and Blade Warband Wikia

Characters Guidelines:

Character Sheet Template:
Name: (Simply a worthy name for your character, if possible try to pick something that fits the character's origins and the lore of Mount and Blade Warband)
Gender: (No real restrictions on gender, barring some very specific professions, see lore section for more information)
Age: (Unless you have some very good reasons I would prefer all characters were eighteen years of age or older)
Faction of Birth: What faction (nation) does your character hail from?
Allegiance: List any particular allegiance your character has (although ideally they should simply be a soldier/mercenary/trader/etc. looking for work)
Experience: (Choose from one of three experience levels: green, veteran, or elite, to indicate the general competence of your character. This choice should make sense given the background of your character and other factors like their age, for example a 15 year old peasant will probably not be the most capable soldier)
FeudalRank: Commoner or Noble (major/minor nobility)

Appearance: (Describe in writing what your character looks like, their stature and any other physical attributes that you feel are important. Length is negotiable, but at least a couple of solid sentences are usually needed to flesh out a character's appearance. )

Personality: (Again, I don't really need a huge amount of text, but I'd like to see a couple of sentences that give a "feel" for who your character is and how people are likely to perceive them.)

Talents: (A couple of sentences mentioning any specific talents or skills your character brings to the party, i.e. mention if your character is a trained swordsman, pickpocket, hunter, blacksmith, chemist, etc.)

Biography: (A biography of your character, feel free to write in whatever way you find best, be it a dialogue, letter format or simply the standard biographical format. Please do not neglect this portion of the CS as it will be one of the primary means of judging your character and making sure they fit the setting. Feel free to PM many any questions you have. I would like to see at least 250+ words of writing, but quality is always preferred over quantity. If there are some things about your character you would rather not publicly reveal you may PM me these portions of your character's background. With that being said I will not accept blanket statements of "I'll reveal his/her background during the RP" unless you can provide me with some amazing reasoning why this is fair to the other players.)

Equipment: (Check the Weapons, Armor, Equipment, and Combat section for information regarding equipment)

Worn (clothing/armor):

Weapons (melee weapons, shields and ranged weapons):

Horse:

Miscellaneous (anything else):

Nah, classic Warband start, so 1257.

To clarify, what I mean in the "Concept" section by "no grand armies" and similar was just that the focus of the RP at the start will be on a small(ish) party of player characters (with some NPCs thrown in if needed to fill out the trade caravan).

Essentially, I want to try to ensure that things start smoothly by having all the characters start the RP together (rather than the other classic approach we've used where everyone kind of takes charge of there own little army)

My bad, updated with the correct map, no anti-Sarranid bias here.  :iamamoron:

Edit: Before I forget, in regards to character experiences/profession/knowledge, combat ability is obviously good, but realistically other useful skills would also be great (like medical knowledge, smithing, etc.).

Awesome!

Just think of a reason said Khergit ended up in Jelkela (although this is Warband so that kind of stuff seems to happen all the time).

Sorry for pulling my post, didn't want to double post and I didn't see you're reply.

For simplicity sake, I'm just gonna assume everyone speaks a common language.

Name: Qualug Tarkhan
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Faction of Birth: Khergit
Allegiance: His horse and himself
Experience: Veteran
Feudal Rank: Freeman
Appearance: Hardened and weather from a lifetime on the steppes, Qualug is you're standard Khergit. 5'9, a light 130lbs, ragged, looks out of place anywhere not on a horse and in the steppes.

Personality: Standoffish and un-engaging, Qualug dislikes cities, boats, the sand and highborn nobles. He is fully willing to commit acts of outlawry and other such foul acts, but would rather remain a decent person in the eyes of the law.

Talents: Riding, Horse-archery, Path-finding, tracking and spotting. And stealing things. He does that to.

Biography: Born to a shepard in Ada Kulum, he was passed to a band of steppe raiders under the command of Altan Uruk Kashiktan at the tender age of 15. The veteran raider used Qualug to hold his horses, until he eventually took the young lad under his wing and trained him in the art of light cavalry and horsemanship. Bloodied in innumerable raids, Qualug remained with the band until Altan finally settled down. After altan left, the band fell into pure steppe banditry, eventually being smashed by a pair of pissed of Noyans. Qualug managed to escape, and decided to lay low for a few years. The Kingdom of Rhodoks sounded like a good bet, Altan rarely going into those mountains with his band.

Of course, he still needs to eat, and has no skills other then those of a bandit outrider.

Equipment:

Worn (clothing/armor): Steppe Cap, boots, Khergit Lamellar vest.

Weapons (melee weapons, shields and ranged weapons): Round cavalry shield, Iron war axe, dagger, Vaegirian War Bow, Khergit Arrows quiver x2. (Note: In typical Khergit fashion, his quivers are slung across the hindquarters of his mount and not carried personally. This means that his warbow is useless unmounted, and thus almost always left with his steed.)

Horse: Arkrijuth, mare, flighty and nimble light blue Roan Hunter.

Miscellaneous: Regular outrider kit, wine and waterskin, blankets, the like.

I decided to keep it pretty basic. We all are familiar with steppe bandits and what they do, don't want to bore people with stories of raiding that don't really affect the RP.

Pretty much, I'm figure either everyone by great fortune speaks a common language (which we can settle on) or we can go with a lingua franca in the form of Calradian or some similar remnant of the common tongue of the Empire.

Notwithstanding a current lack of history.

Name: Eadmund Howe

Gender: Male

Age: 29

Faction of Birth: The Kingdom of Swadia

Allegiance: To the highest bidder, none yet

Experience: He is a veteran soldier. Has been soldiering for thirteen years

Feudal Rank: A free tenant (I.e. a commoner)

Appearance: He is 5'7”, has brown eyes, an unshaven rough face with premature lines, and mid-length light brown hair that is already greying. Still recovering from his last injury.

Personality: Sanguine, he is gregarious and a loquacious type, and he values the ideals inherent to Temperance such as restraint, duty and self-discipline.

Talents: Although he has had early practise in the use of the long- and shortbow, he is not experienced with a full-poundage warbow. He prefers and is experienced in the use of spear, and is adept with a sword and shield for when pressed. Has fought from horseback but only in pursuit of routed foes. He was responsible for the training and welfare of his own vintaine, has a passing knowledge in some forms of healing learnt through experience, repairs all his own weapons, hunts, and has spent some time with seige equipment.

Biography: Eadmund was born back in 1228, in Suno, to freeman Walter Howe, a keeper of an inn. Eadmund's mother, Edith, was the daughter of a local bowyer. Eadmund was the second eldest of four siblings; two sisters and a younger brother. Growing up, he was apprenticed as a hostler at his father's inn and also helped in bookkeeping. His maternal household practised with some of his grandfather's bows and had matches (that they usually won) against fellow guilds-men.

At the age of sixteen, he was levied to serve with his liege, Count Klargus, in the forces loyal to current Swadian king. After developing a taste for foreign things and finding that he enjoyed soldiering, he joined with a company of mercenaries after serving in the levy for the contracted period. Over the next thirteen years he marched under the company's banner into the lands of the easterners and through the lands of home. The mercenary company had soldiers from many nations – mainly Swadians and northern Nords but also leavened with Vaegirs, southerners of Rhodok, and a few eastern folk – all tempted to come have a profitable time or escape a gaol sentence under the employ of the company. At twenty-one, he earnt his right to command his own vintaine (a unit of twenty), finding himself adept at leading men and training new recruits. For reasons of ease and of prudence, he decided to indulge in the many cultures of his fellows. In 1250, he married Sibylle, clothier and eldest daughter of his mother's engineering cousin who he met during a siege upon the Khergits. Through the latter, he learnt about the mechanics of siege warfare, especially about the machines. In 1254, then with child, Sibylle left to live with Eadmund's family back in Suno. His daughter is named Adeliza. All are in good health.

A recent skirmish has left him with a gammy left arm, a result of being run into by a stray horse.

Left company service and is currently in Jelkela to find service with one of the rich litsters or velvet producers or even in the king's service itself.

Equipment:
Worn (clothing/armor): When travelling he simply wears normal clothes like a green tunic, maroon hose with leg-wrappings, turnshoes, leather gloves, a green cloak with yellow embroidery etc. When properly outfitted, he wears an off-white gambeson and a padded-coif under a nasal helmet. These last items are kept in panniers on his horse. Used to wear a red and black tabard but this was lost.

Weapons (melee weapons, shields and ranged weapons): He usually carries an arming sword, a quartered black-&-white kite shield, and an old-style seax. His primary weapons when properly outfitted is a lugged spear of five cubits sometimes with a pennon affixed which would be the company livery (a yellow sun in splendour dawning behind breaking waves underneath a red sky); these are usually carried strapped to his horse.

Horse: Has a dark bay rouncey named Amarante

Miscellaneous (anything else): Also carried are supplies such as tallow, a touchstone, food, cider etc. kept in panniers. Found himself a Heretic's Fork.

So far so good, at least for me, still waiting to hear from GisforGamma.

In other news had some time to work on my own CS, reading Angelsachsen's CS I was inspired to reacquaint myself with medieval fashion.

Secondly, since naming horses seems to be all the rage:

Horse: For the long journey to Dhirm, the elderly merchant has generously provided Orso with a trusty steed. A dapple gray courser called Nalst, the well-mannered creature represents only a portion of the winnings won by Bertram as a result of a remarkably successful series of wagers.

Those do indeed look spiffy!

Are you just using Photoshop/GIMP to remove everything but the character?

Rumor has it that there is a Sarranid in the works from a familiar poster.

With Gammagirl's valuable feedback in hand, I'm accepting both your characters. Although feel free to message me if you want me to change something in the Character Sheets or even if you feel you want to try something entirely different (although I like both your characters, so not trying to lead you astray in that regard, but I'm willing to be pretty flexible for this RP).

Yep, and for a little recolouring like the now-maroon-previously-grey hose.

Nice job!

In other news IC is unlocked and I trust all of you enough that I'm fine with you posting if the mood strikes you.

I'll be fairly busy until Friday afternoon (after-which I am on a week-long break), but I've talked with A_Mustang and Rallix in regards to an idea of how their character joins the party. Trying to scheme something up for Howe and I'll see if Gammagirl has a post in mind.

That said, I'm totally down for collaborative work and if you'd prefer to hash something out with me before posting that's also fine.
