Elite caravans spawn some of those dudes, but they seem to be normal trader npcs, since they don't have any good combat gear and they don't even have horses making caravans slower. Is there any point to the Caravan Master Troop? I am making a troop overhaul mod and I am thinking of giving those guys better loot so they can help guard caravans they are part of.

The caravan memester is a meme unit.
He has awful equipment, mediocre skills and can't be promoted BUT he is super MLG and epic meme, so you should recruit as many of them as you can and avoid them dieing at all cost.

why give caravan good troops and gear? what they are guarding? grains, meat, cheese, wood, all kind of goods, why should have elite troops to guard it?
