Caravan fights seem very odd

The starting deployment for the caravan attack scene really needs to be changed. It is more than a bit silly that you start totally disorganized trying to attack the caravan through thick woods with other obstacles. Combined with the odd formation adjustments the AI does, it makes the battle harder and bloodier than fighting a larger force on a normal battlefield. Also, you start so close that my skirmishers are usually slaughtered before I can even get a command off...it's just a very strange battle scene.
 
There are two or 3 scenes for this battle mode, I imagine that Adorno like some screenshot or clues  for meet which it is :mrgreen:
 
I know what he means, and I also find the scene a little odd and tough (I didn't make it) :smile:
(it's the one in the woods on a hill and a swampy area).

What would you like instead? I could edit the scene - remove some trees/obstacles and change spawn points, or make a new one.
 
It's that first one - took me a moment as it looks nicer from that angle :smile:

Some ideas:
Move the player spawn to their right (subjective left from that screenshot) so that they are further from the defenders at start and don't have to deal with the rocks/stream to their left.

Start the defenders downhill further (at or beyond the caravan) so they can't charge into you before you even get ranks sorted.

Delete the stream coming down the hill and some combination of the rocks/trees such that the AI formations don't get so disrupted trying to form up at the start.

I think any of those might change it enough to be more playable. As is, I'd rather be ambushed by the caravan than fight on that map :wink:

 
How do I keep my skirmishers from running 10 meters ahead of my group and getting slaughtered in so many battles?
It's so annoying to have to position them and often there is no time.
Can this default be changed?
I didn't see it in Native.
 
I think it's added to simulate reality in the sense that archers would be in the front. I too would like to know if it can be changed to position the troops manually.
 
LOL just tried this out - total mess by the time my troops got organized to some shape the enemy was already right in front. I also got stuck on some rock and coukd not move forward so had to go around through the strem.

Why does this scene has to be different than a normal battlefield? The funny part about it that it comes up even if I fight on a totally flat terrain.
 
Damn. You should have taken a screenshot when you got stuck.
The scene is scripted to load when fighting a caravan regardless of the overland map landscape.

I've moved spawn points further apart and down the hill. Works better like that.
 
These are not necessarily my favorite maps, but after all, you are being ambushed and the intent is to be surprised, rushed, disorganized, and generally more in deep kimshi than normal battles.
 
why do I have to be ambushed if I am stopping them, if anything they are ambushed. BTW mine said that I thwarted the ambush
 
Haven't attacked caravans with 1.39 but with 1.38 this caravan map was horrible. My troops are stuck under the fallen tree and when I try to get them to the village they get either stuck there or on the way. To improve the map all those points where troops get stuck would have to be removed. It's probably easier to just delete it.

And btw, this has nothing to do with being ambushed (and you shouldn't be ambushed every time when YOU attack something anyway). It's unfortunately simply a badly designed map.
 
The scene does not have an AI mesh (so troops don't avoid obstacles).
I didn't make the scene but I can fix it.
 
That's already sounds like a great improvement. But another thing, my troops seem to be spawned below that fallen tree, which messes up formation. Could that be changed, too?
 
i have had no problem with that battle map, but then i order my men to charge at once while i make a semi-circle and flank the opponents. after all they are fighting up hill and i have the momentum, i consider this the easy map.

what annoys me is that i get ambushed by a caravan that i am chasing, and it is my impression that it happens a lot of the time.
just tested on a Dumnonia caravan and was ambushed 4 out of 5 times... but perhaps i just were unlucky with this one.
