I've noticed that when you fight a battle as an army commander, and you have nobles leading your various battalions, they will be on their horses even if they are leading infantry or archers. This can lead to nobles riding way off ahead of their unit and getting killed.
What I tend to do is cycle through all the troops and set all the non-horse troops to "dismount" to make sure any mounted captains get on foot. Maybe the infantry/archer groups could all just start battles in "dismount" by default.
