Can't join fight with commander

When I join an army, and my commander attacks an enemy I'm neutral towards, the game won't let me attack them. I'm given the option to join my commander, and then another screen claiming that I've found the commander and whoever he's attacking and asks if I want to intervene, and if I'm not already hostile to the target my commander attacked, it won't let me join on my commander's side.

In addition, I don't see any options to work as a mercenary for a faction.

The option is there. But it basically only exists in the vanilla warband way. That is to say as a random quest that you get from the faction lords when you ask if they need any favors. I know I can get it semi consistently if I ask the marshal. I just got a tour of duty with the Khergit done.

I have fixed most of the freelancer infinite loops for 1.7.  For now if you get stuck, ask for leave and then rejoin your commander after the battle.
