Can't change troop skills, please help

I'm editing module_troops.py and trying to change my troops' riding and athletic skills to 10. I can change the values to 10 and build the new module fine but when I check their stats it's the same. How do I fix this? Also, is there any way to edit my troops' attributes like str and agi? Thanks in advance.

If I recall correctly, this stuff won't take effect until you start a new game.
