Can't beat the first mission

Recruit
Started off in Ravenstern (sp?) with 1/4 damage to me and 3/4 damage to allies. Got me about 11 recruits and attacked the band of 4 robbers. Ran around with my horse shooting the unarmoured guys, started shooting the big berserker bastard with a 2H axe. Shot him about 8 times and thought "hey he must be really hurt now". ran back to my recruits, dismounted and the bastard charged and slaughtered all of us with his big stupid machine gun axe

Is there a difference in this game which I haven't noticed yet or am I just ****ing retarded?

Are some characters in this game heroes?

There are hero spawns in the game. But your problem might be that the mod is made for very experienced players and is meant to be really hard and challenging. Sounds like you encountered a Bearclaw berserker. Those can be quite the challenge in a frontal confrontation on low levels if you. Didn't know they appeared in the intro mission, but I usually decline that one.

I had trouble with the tutorial mission in 3.42 as well.  I just waited until I had companions like LethalD and Jocelyn and some Barclay sappers before I did the quest heh.  There's no time limit on the quest, so dont worry about it.  You won't get past the hideout part without high tier troops either.  There's more of those bearclaw leaders there, mine had about 4 of them.  And they took out LethalD, roland and Jocelyn pretty easily on foot.

As others have mentioned, this mod is not really meant for newbies to Warband.  In this mod you will really need to employ cunning, skill and tactics to overcome your enemies.  Not just F3 (there are, of course, exceptions).  Also, recruits fall under the "fodder" category.  In vanilla Warband the maximum level you would see from soldiers was about 30-35 IIRC.  In PoP it is closer to max level.

Wait until your first Noldor encounter.

More like wait until he sees Dem . . .

Even more like wait until he meets Syla Uzas.

Why do people hype Syla Uzas so much? I had no trouble with him whatsoever.
The three seers and Eyegrim are the bad ones.

Because he can rape Noldor, because all his units are badass and because he will turn a battle into slaughter if you make one wrong move? Because battling him doesn't get easier with each round? Any spawn is easy if you use the right tactics.
I don't know much about Eyegrim but Three Seers have too much fodder to my tastes.

Heheh, the first mission now really welcomes you to Pop:smile:) now this is exactly as i imagine the first mission with the first line from Gothic "welcome to the colony" *punch and players is K.O.*

Leaders were added to all the bandit lairs for pop 3.42. The Idea behind it was, add leaders for a better loot drop from the lair.

Actually it started because lairs were soooo easy and gave 3000 experience, you could do the quest with 2 barclay sappers in day 1 and get 3000 exp:smile: Now the lairs are brought to the real Pop world

Plus come on...A band of brigands ALWAYS has a leader...(Whether that leader is a giant half naked man with a 2h axe or a drunk skinny dude with a bunch of daggers that gets knocked out in pubs all the time is debatable)

I think the key phrase is "A leader".  Not 5-6 that decimate LethalD, Jocelyn, Roland, and Barclay sappers...

The only problem is that this also effects the tutorial quest.  I have no problem with that being the standard with other lairs, but c'mon...

When the mod is not for beginners there is no need for a tutorial quest. You know how to play the game - and in fact, now that I think about it, it's acutally a perfect tutorial to teach you difference between PoP and Native: PoP will kill the **** outta you every opportunity it gets.

Tutorial successful.

I wish there was a like or thank button.

+1 from me, atleast.

PoP is alot more strategy than you'd think.

Seers + Eyegrim are harder for me...

This is from the perspective of someone who has played since around M&B .8 or so (I started when it was a $10 beta)

The problem is more with the speed of escalation with the hero leader. I am mowing through the outlaws with no problems while gathering my initial 5 troops. I get to my first Mysticmountain leader and after easily killing his minions, I empty 20 arrows into him for no damage at all, I ride back to my camp and swap out my bow for my lance and kill him with 2 passes. I then head to the hideout and I see another MML. I think "what the hell, this might be interesting with no horse" and it is worse than any MP chamber blocking master I have ever seen... but he isn't chamber blocking, he is just getting his followup swing immediately. I try all sorts of fun things... I pepper him with arrows, but he runs so fast I don't get too many off, then I go full defense while my men batter him from behind as I lead him around, but they do no damage that I can tell and eventually he kills them all and then me.

It just seems largely unwinnable at the level you get the quest and it leads me to a feeling that what the game means by "harder" is that some opponents just have more hitpoints and high armor levels very early.  I can deal with that, but there is such a steep jump up from the push-over outlaws you fight to the MML that act as their leader that it feels gimmicky. Im going to just skip the quest and level up, but it is an annoying start.

***EDITED TO ADD***

I did complete the quest, but it was a pita. I had to collect taxes for a lord to afford an experienced companion and buy a good crossbow, because it seemed that nothing else I could do would get through the Mystic leaders armor.  I had to use my men to keep him busy as I shot him from behind. Luckily I didn't run out of followers until all the tough guys were killed. They did seem to have lighter hit points than the one I had to lance charge, but it still seems like a huge jump from all the wimpy outcasts to the leaders.

I agree completely.

Really? In my current game he was nearly whacked off by a Fierdsvain army on campaign. Though I have seen him annihilate noldor yes. I like the three seers and the dread legion because of all the fodder. I prefer vast amounts of low tier troops to get a more realistic feel of how a feudal (just assuming) military machine would contain a large amount of levies and such. I always stack my army with a contingent of militia and peasant to get decent casualties on my side too in the later stages of the game. But if you field mosly cavalry (as I never do) I can see how Syla would be problematic.

Are you kidding?! Sylas can rape any army. My Fierdsvain Army had no problem with the three seers. Just full of pathetic wannabes, although their archers are reasonable.
