Can't assign Vanguard role

I see no option to assign anyone as Vanguard, I can see the other three party roles though. I have someone with Spotting 3, Tracking of 3 and Path-finding of 3 in my party. I don't know if I'm experiencing a bug or something else. Do I have to join/create a faction before I can have a vanguard? I'm on version 0.26. Thank you.

The Vanguard role was added in 0.27.3.

Download that version or the latest (beta/untested) 0.3. They are both stickied as threads.
