Can we come to a consensus about Village?

I never heard of the 'side gate' that's ridiculous!
Your avatar is ridiculous!
wut? It just has some pixels!

Arch3r 说:
"Gate with fence", or "Gate with controls", "Gate on the right" for the main gate.
"Open gate", "Gate on the left" for the back gate.
"Barn gate" for the side gate.

Seems clear enough for me.

Clear but perhaps too long. You're typing quick orders, not trying to give a speech!

GwF, GwC, GotR, OG, GotL, BG

easy enough?

so now all the roofs...

Julia 说:
How about "Tower gate" for the gate inside the tower.  "Gatehouse" for the gate with the tower beside it.  "Barngate" works good for the "back" gate.

That's when things start getting confusing I think  (except for barn gate)

From 12 on clock clockwise it goes, Opposite gate, right gate, left ladder, left gate. That's for attackers, no one gets confused about the names then.

That's just relative

Best to find descriptive terms that are always the same.

Back Gate I refer to as Top Gate, as it is on the "hill"
Bottom Gate is the Tower Gate

But the other two I refer to as the same in this diagram.

Fenced gate or right gate takes hour to type, ur right...towergate on the otherhand is done with just a few buttons.

exactly. I was actually thinking something more along the lines of "gate at the tower with the portcullis and ladders," "open gate by the tower with rooftops around it," and "stable/barn and rampart gate."

Seriously though, I just thought of something. The portcullis is the only gate that has a ladder over it. What if we called it "ladder gate." Then the other could be called "hill gate," and the last would be "barn gate."

That is perfect.  Ladder Gate, Hill Gate, and Barn Gate.  Simple, and anyone who is familiar with the map will not get them confused.

(It's the Back Gate)  It seems like I never heard anyone get confused over which gate was which until the last few patches.  Maybe it's all the new people.  As I said before, the designations generally accepted on US servers by veteran players are:

Front Gate (portcullis)

Back Gate (left of outside spawn)

Barn Gate (the one with a barn )

if everyone got a compass there would be no problem. You simply could say "south gate", "west ladder" or whatever it is. Perhaps an official map showing the cardinal directions would suffice for now.

I also would like to see a little compass stuck in somewhere, either in a HUD or preferably a pop-up, semitransparent overview map.  It would help a lot in team communication, especially on plains and steppe maps.

Actually I'm familiar with the map and have no idea what the 'hill gate' is.

uh... it's the only gate on a hill (in the picture on this thread, the west gate)

and yes, a compass would solve this problem

Shouldn't you guys first pick something to base your directions on and then pick the directions?

Wouldn't it be easier to base the attacking spawn as the South and start from there?

Yes

Though not everyone who plays will read this thread. If we have the descriptive terms I proposed most recently, there will be no arguments like
-"I said go to the west gate!"
-"I did!"
-"no you went to the north gate!"
-"no! that's west!"
-"no! the left is west!"
-"but what's left?"
and etc

until we actually get official directions/compass, the best and least confusing option is the descriptive terms.

"ladder gate", "hill gate", and "barn gate" for example

Did anyone play the HL2 mod called NeoTokyo:Source? It had a great method to handle this stuff, at the bottom of your screen you would basically have some sort of advanced compass showing you the east, west, northeast, etc etc directions you were looking in. That way you could look in the direction you want people to go then check the bottom of your screen and read the direction and then tell your team that there's an enemy there for example.

Maybe something similar could be usefull in M&B?

- Commander: Everyone go to the west!
- People: *look at bottom of their screen, find West* Aye sir!
