Dmitry Kurnias 10th August 1024
Another puppet kingdom of the Sarranids had decided that Calradian rule was not to their liking, and had risen up against the Empire. The 9th Legion had been sent to recapture the lands under the control of Sultan Bundukdari, the ruler given control of the lands near Durquba. The inhabitants of this area would have no more rights than he did back in Rhodokia. Rhodokia had been captured by the Calradians first, and subsequently was treated with less respect than the Vaegirs or migrant Nords. Because the first Emperor had considered all non-Swadians to be scum and had set up a knight order to make life more difficult for the Rhodoks, the new emperors were honour-bound to fund these people and leave them be.
Dmitry was interrupted in his thoughts by the yells of the watchmen and the distant sight of sand kicking up in the distance. The Sarranids were here. Bundukdari had managed to amass a larger army than Emperor Frederick had expected, the Mamelukes marched at the front the chanmail hidden by cloth showing only the small amount of plate they wore. The result was a cheap illusion meant to scare the newer soldiers. It had no effect on people who had fought them before though, who knew how they still died only with a tad more difficulty than a bandit.
"Eleventh crossbows! over here!" yelled Captain Stauffen, rallying us to him. We lined up in our five deep rows and went to where we were to take up position on top of a hill. The Seventh Vaegir Infantry were to stand to the left of us and move in should an infantry unit assault our position. The Sultans army continued to pour into the land ahead of us until it looked as if we were outnumbered, the second half of the 9th would be besieging Durquba already, leaving us to deal with the majority of his army. His Mamelukes took up position at the forefront of his army, leaving no doubt as to which troops to be expecting first. Dmitry lifted his crossbow but both sides were well out of shooting range so he lowered it again.
"Kurnias! is that you?" said a man to Dmitry's right he turned and recognised Gottfried beside him.
"Gottfried, good to see you." replied Dmitry
"You too" replied Gottfried "So, what do you reckon Budukdari's doing?"
"No idea but I'm certain we'll be able to beat him."
"Hear anything about the man being born with a third arm?"
"No, whose been telling people that?"
"The higher-ups themselves." They both chuckled.
"Whatever these 'demon-man plans to do we'll be waiting."
"Take aim!" said Stauffen, butting in after seeing the first of the Mamelukes Charge in at the lines of infantry in the centre of the line. Volleys were loosed from every part of the line at the approaching Mamelukes, knocking many off their horses and tripping a fair few mounts. The Horde of riders continued on and the archers on the flanks started choosing new targets amongst the slowly advancing infantry. The Mamelukes crashed into the lines of infantry in the centre of the line, knocking over quite a number with the force of the charge and cutting down those who stood back up. The third rank had not been reached though and they put up a fierce defense chopping at the first group Mamelukes to get past the first two lines. The remainders of the front two lines melted back into the lines of infantry holding steady against the Mamelukes. The Horsemen pulled back to regroup and let the infantry past to attack the Calradian ranks, in the intervening moments before the infantries clashed with each other was just enough time to loose a volley into the Sarranid infantry. They fell easily because their shields weren't ready.
The archers had been able turn back the infantry, and as they began to regroup out of their range. The Calradian cavalry came in from the flanks and decimated the infantry and what was left of the Mamelukes. The rows of infantry charged into the me-lee and shortly after so did the archers. After a good few minutes the infantry of the Sarranids retreated and looking upon the amount of troops still standing on the other side, surrendered. Dmitry raised his crossbow to fire again, but Gottfried told him not to. Most of Bundukdaris men army had surrendered, still alive and Durqubas ransom brokers would make them rich today. He advanced to join the looting of the dead and sword-point removal of the enemies armor and weapons.
