Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Graphics: 5 (although, the dark atmosphere makes all flaws invisible )
Game Physics: 4 (TBH, its like some kind of shooter... but no sprints or any abilities.. only run, crouch, jump, reload, action)
Sound: 7 (The things you hear and the ambient is really great... one of the best I've seen)
Ambient/Atmosphere: 9.5  (One of the greatest I have seen... why it doesn't have a 10 is because of the graphics.. all the rest is flawless! Can be creepy at times... although not TOO scary)
Fun: 9 (Great fun, finding out new stuff and just going around the places is GREAT! Although the comabt isn't that great.. all the chases, boss battles and things you need to do make it a game.. and at times adrenaline pumping.)
Overall: 8 (Definitely worth a try... and if your a Lovecraft fan, this would be in your top 5 games )

This, game is great... and I tried giving the points as fair as possible. Even though I myself LOVED the game, and finished it 4 times...
Yes, the game starts out like none other...
But later it gets a bit "dilute". Because you start feeling more in power when you get a lot of ammo and weapons.
Also, in the beginning what made it so good is not even having a weapon. So it was even more tense... running from corner to corner hiding in the shadows... praying to god not to get spotted

I would recommend this game to EVERYONE. Except to children younger than 14. (So they don't get any wrong ideas) the game itself can be gory... but nothing you haven't most prolly seen in any horror you watched

So it sounds like none of you who own it would necessarily recommend AGAINST getting it?

I'm slowly gravitating toward getting more-or-less all of Bethesda's games. Fallout 3 was IMO a masterpiece. I waited a year to buy it, and so I missed out on any of the post-release beta crap that has become so common with so many games.

Just bought Oblivion IV GOTY, and looking forward to loading that up. Slightly annoyed though cause I paid for Overnight next day delivery when I ordered it on Friday and it still has yet to arrive (Sunday 10:40AM). I sent a note to Take2 store telling them I expect to get my shipping refunded.

The Truck scene.  That to me rested neatly between the Mafia driving mission and a generic X-Com Terror from the Deep Cruise Ship mission in terms of hair pulling frustration.  That said, the game is worth even that pain.  Besides, you can skip it by playing it to the truck scene, then grab a save game from the internet and bypassing it.

RE Fallout 3 - I played it only for the Soundtrack.  A far superior Post Apocalyptic game is Stalker.  One of the few games which had me cowering in dread.

RE Oblivion GOTY edition - get it modded ASAP.  The combat is almost as good as M&B when modded and more content and features have been added than the past few MMO expacks.

The sequel got cancelled back in '05

I think I'm too desensitized - it doesn't scare me. Last game to do that was F.E.A.R.

FEAR was more jumpy horror rather than atmospheric horror.

The only other horror game to be as atmospheric s CoC:grin:CotE (and, in my opinion surpass it) was STALKER.

I have, but I still found STALKER to be superior owing to the fact that I love and prefer sandbox games.  The horror in the games are different as well, Silent Hill being more psychological (and thus more comparable to CoC:grin:CotE) while in Stalker the fear is more survival/primal (being constantly vigilant to marauding dogs, taking careful note of geiger counter ticks, being stalked by Snorks (one even followed me to the underground area... much jumps from that) and looking out for two milky eyes while your speakers pump out panting.  The feeling of dread in the atmosphere and scenery is comparable, with the fog being matched by the bleak dead landscape of the Zone and the claustrophobic hellhole of the underworld being matched by the imposing, oppressive concrete monstrosities of the X-labs

Regarding the other games mentioned, it's more apples and oranges.  Oblivion (with mods) is more immersive than Silent Hill and Stalker with living, breathing cities and interactive objects (although you can't yet bake bread à la Ultima).

I think the sandbox makes it much less scary
I have to say you are one scared person
Seriously????

Most people who say such things usually betray their own insecurity.

Game crashes on startup, got it from Steam, running windows 7 64 bit.

Rage.

Ever played silent hill?
I think the game surpasses all the ones you've mentioned
Every played Amnesia: The Dark Descent?

Yeah. Enough said.

Also, what gamma do you guys suggest running this on? I try to make it according to the game's standards, but it gets too dark to the point where I can barely make out faces.

I think this thread was made before that was released.

herp-de-derp, I didn't look at the time of the post, my bad.

EDIT: Hm, my game keeps crashing after I make it past the bad guys in the warehouse and get into the safe room via the ladder out of the floor. Any solutions?

Kronic had this, another solution would be to "hump" the crate repeatedly until it's out of the way.

I've searched around and still haven't found any reason or solution to why my CoC from Steam crashes on start up every single time. D:

Sometimes this happens to me too. Things hidden in plain view can be harder to see than something hidden in less obvious methods.

It's not like it hadn't occurred to me that Steam could be the issue. I've been specifically searching for Steam copies of CoC crashing at start up. No fixes that I've found.

What kind of Monster appear from that strange door in the first mission?

Also I'm on vista will i be able to run it?

It's a ****ty console port.
Kronic streamed the whole game a few weeks ago and it worked. Amazon says it works in everything from XP to 7.

But you'll encounter problems every now and then. For exmaple in one mission you won't be able to see the targets you're supposed to shoot at and have to more or less guess where they are.
Also countless bugs and gltiches like the ones discussed on teh last page(s).

As far as I recall it was supposedly a member of "The great race of yith".

Oh god, I hated that bug...
