Taylor DeGuiles

Born into a rich family in the Kingdom of Gallica*, Taylor enjoyed a comfortable life. Unlike his other more foppish family, Taylor desired a life of action, of chivalry and battles. His father reluctantly agreed to finance Taylor's training and as the years passed, he became a fine warrior of high moral code. Taylor was naive however and refused to open his eyes to the corruption that was entrenched firmly in his beloved Gallica. His father had hoped to marry Taylor off to a influential merchant's daughter. But Taylor refused, so his father wished him dead instead, rather than have such a deviant of a son. But the crafty son caught wind of his father's ill deeds and, filled with disgust, prepared to leave. Taylor was a man of the people though, and he managed to coax several of his father's soldiers into joining him on his escapade. As Taylor and his men arrived in Calradia, their spirits were high as they imagined what wonders this foreign land would reveal.

Lord Lamandale (654 c.)

Lord Lamandale is growing old, really old. Even if he still remembers a few good moves, his arthritis prevents him to fight as he was used to. Of course he would like to definitively leave the charge of his fief to his elder son yet he fears that he is not ready for such a charge, so he still has to lead his troops to battle from time to time. Hopefully, if Lord Lamandale's body is slowly betraying him, the experience gained from the many battles he fought is still alive in his mind. Moreover, most of his men have been serving him for several years now, and the confidence they have in their master is on the battlefield a deciding advantage alone.

Cognedru Lamandale (620 c.)

Cognedru is the first son of Lord Lamandale. As such, he will be eventually called to be in charge of the family fief yet the old Lord is not willing, arguing that even if Cognedru had proven to be a valuable fighter, he still lacks the necessary wits to be a Lord. So here he is, closing to his 27th year and still serving in the King's Marshall party, only leading a bunch of recruits his father agreed to let leave. Alas Cognedru is growing restless of waiting, and if the old Lord Lamandale is still alive, it is only because his elder son is not smart enough to come up with a sound plan in order to dispose of him.

Nartal (680 c.)

Nartal is the second son of Lord Lamandale, and assuredly the smartest of the brotherhood. When he was young, he always managed to avoid Cognedru bully behavior, leaving all the fight to Lerrant, his younger brother. Lord Lamandale was expecting to make a brillant clerk out of Nartal, hoping he would eventually assist is elder brother in ruling the fief when the time would come, until he heard out about the affair Nartal was having with a soldier. Quickly thrown out the castle with only some of his belongings, Nartal tried to make a living by bargaining goods from town to town. Thanks to his knack for haggling, he is now leading a wealthy caravan on the roads of Calradia.

Brother Lerrant (750 c.)

Lerrant is the third and last son of Lord Lamandale, and grew being considered as a potential remplacement, would one of the elder brothers die, in his father's plans. Desperately aspiring to be esteemed by his sire, he spends his youth fighting with his elder brother, Cognedru, which got worse over the years until blood was shed. At this point, Lord Lamandale decided to put an end at this by sending Lerrant in a far away monastery. Lerrant stayed a few months only with the retired monks, until he had a chance to escape to Tihr. Here he gained the trust of the Lord Aedin by performing disgraceful tasks that no knight would have accepted : merchant assassination, thievery, spying, leading peasants into uprising and soldiers into desertion...

Pietaille (798 c.)

Pietaille is born villein in Haen, spent his youth looking after sheep, and was meant to marry an ugly farmer. So when a Lord came to the village looking for new recruits, she seized her chance : dressing up with boy clothes, she stand up silently behind the volunteers. Since they were all grimed, and the Lord in a hurry, she was quickly hired, given a rusted sword and sent to her fate on the battlefield. She managed to survive long enough to end up on garrison, and made her best to look as male as possible... until the Lord learned about her affair with one of his sons. Rather than confront his wrath, she took the choice to flee. After spending her last denars in Tihr, she earned the lead of mercenaries by beating them with furniture during a tavern brawl. Hence she is the 'Stool Lady'.

Couldn't pass on a contest like this, here's my character (the whole backstory is way longer but I shortened it to meet the requirements - 799 characters now :wink: )

Originally my character was supposed to be a Rhodok, later a character driven away from the Khergit homelands outside of Calradia. Since having an "external" background was preferred, I slightly rewrote the story to keep this character "neutral", so he could be a Rhodok just as easily as a Vaegir or a stranger from a foreign land, simply depending on how the player interprets the first and last sentences of the bio. I think that's kinda fitting for a custom battle generator since everyone can just make up his own detailed story about him  :smile:

Ethyron Dayel

Bio:

Born as the only son of a minor noble, Ethyron spent most of his youth learning about the ways of honour and fighting. His training was far from over however, when an ongoing feud between his father and another Lord, who was organizing a feast his family attended, escalated. Furious, his father ordered his family to leave. In what seemed to be an attempt at saving his face, the other Lord ordered some of his men to escort his family back home.

Rumours say that the entire escort including the Dayel family was tragically killed by steppe bandits. This is far from the truth. Most of the escort still live...

Ethyron barely survived and fled, struggling for many years under a new name until finally becoming the leader of a small warband in distant Calradia. Revenge has to wait, for now...

Sir Conrad
Though he was born a common man, after many years of service as a mercenary captain for the Swadian king, Sir Conrad rose to the ranks of nobility. He has become the rather benevolent ruler of a small village, several miles away from Praven, where he lives now as an elderly man, hoping to live through what remains of his days in peace.

However, recent bandit raids have made life for the villagers hard, and since Sir Conrad has no son, nor good relationships with the more powerful lords, he is the only one the villagers can turn to. In order to protect his fief from further peril, he is forced to pick up his old sword once more.

In his days of fighting, he was quite renowned as a swordsman, and a competent, though not very charismatic captain as well. While his reflexes and strength may have waned quite a bit, his experience and insight make him a dangerous opponent.

Vjolja Pipaluk

Nobody knows where she comes from, altough some say her homelands lay far behind the Great White Mountains, which separate the Kingdom of Vaegirs from the barbarian mountain tribes who live there. According to other sources, she is believed to live in the far east of Kindom of Vaegirs near the Great White Mountains in a mysterious, dense forest, where nobody dares to go. Nobody knows anything of her ancestry, but her name brings fear in the heart of enemies. It is widely known that she and her followers are very skilled in the art of archery, killing anyone who dares to attack innocent people. None escapes their deadly arrows who always seem to hit target, due to magic powers some say, because of their skill others say. It will always be a mystery...

Because this is a character background writing contest, I've written my character's habits and not his exact skills. Let the developers decide what will he be if he is picked. It's their game after all.


Name: Lumos

History: No one is sure where he came from, but what they know is that he is a broad-minded, young warrior.
No one is sure whom he works for, but what they know is that he leads a company of fine troops around Calradia.
No one is sure if he's noble or not, but what they know is that he does not see a difference between nobles and commoners.
No one is sure about his past, but what they know is that it wasn't pretty. He never talks about it.
No one is sure if he is a human because of the many foiled assassination attempts at him. But when he is asked if he is a man indeed, he only smiles and says: 'One day... we'll see.'
No one is sure why he lives like this, but what they know is that he enjoys it.
No one is sure if his many doings are true: breaking in prisons, defeating whole bandit gangs, conquering towns, pillaging villages… But what they know is that he will never bow down before anyone and will sacrifice himself for the lives of his troops if he must.

Lumos prefers bows. In battle he uses a Military Scythe/Glaive, a Two-Handed Sword, a War Bow and some arrows. If he'll be sieging or fighting a difficult battle he equips a One-Handed Sword and a Shield (but not round, he dislikes them. He prefers kite shields). He usually wears something mid-heavy, or maybe some sort of a half-plate - protection plus movement.
He likes to not wear a helm, but in battles he puts on a Nordic Helmet, or perhaps a Bascinet.

Lumos has trained and has become a master with the bow. He also has good abilities for dealing with melee weapons. His downsides are that he hates the crossbow and can poorly fire a bolt; and his very weak abilities of throwing things. He has focused his training on the Intelligence and has a good Surgery skill because he does not like having casualties. He thinks that every single person is important. He also has good constitution and his Strength is not bad. His Agility is also high because he relies on speed more than of strength. His Charisma, however, is not very good.
His riding skills are somewhat good, but his Shield skill is very low, because he rarely uses a shield. He has some experience in Horse Archery. Unfrtunately, his First Aid and Wound Treatment skills are weak.

Jessica Mercer

In the tough world of Calradian commerce, not knowing how to swing a sword will end you up on the wrong end of a ransom demand. Jessica's parents knew that, and did their best to make sure their daughter was raised a respectable woman. While under their auspices, this is exactly what she is. But in her spare time, she spars with the Sword Sisters in the arena and dreams of starting a commercial empire that will crumble the kingdoms and unite all of Calradia under the banner of trade. Equal parts idealist and entrepreneur, tough-girl and lady, Jessica itches for a chance to prove herself on the trails and caravan paths. Although neither formally trained nor strong of arm, Jessica is a natural leader of men with a knack for making the most out of the least.

Concept: This is a tough girl to play - she has almost no combat skills, no lance for thrusting, poor armor, and only a crossbow and a sword for when it comes down to business. She can use the crossbow from horseback for limited harassing attacks, but frankly she's no good in a stand-up fight. Instead the player must rely on their allies in battle, setting them up properly, scouting the direction the enemy is coming from, giving the orders. I don't know if Leadership and Tactics make a difference in the Quick Battle mode, but if they do, her skills here can come in handy. Basically this is for the player who wants to challenge their leadership skills and does not even accidentally want their character to make too big of a difference in the general melee.

Alternative modes: Give her a good armor (Brigandine for instance) and a lance/shield + a higher riding/PS score, and she's a regular merchant-knight, while still being challenging to play.

Bio: One who doesn't know who his family is.. Cohnrad is one that brings victory to his side but he is hated by his men because he doesnt care much about his party. He has defended a Nord City against a gigantic Warband of 500 Swadian Infantry by leading the people of the town to a trap of the enemy, as a bait, Thats why he is hated He has made plans to become the strongest in Calradia, by combining his forces with 3 more lords. His axe and his foes' blood are his art, and war is love to him. Just like a Barbarian, he excels in war as a great melee fighter. He is the bells of terror for his enemies, and the sound of victory for his allies. He has a high spirit and a war cry which makes the whole army pysched for victory..!

Bio:
Hallgrim was born in 1227 in the lands far north from Calradia called Orkna. When he was a boy there were rough times in his home as the weather was to cold and his family was starving, in early age he started practising with the bow and sword with his father as they ventured through the snowy wastelands to hunt for food. As the years passed his skills with the bows were unremarkable he was well respected for his archery skills in his homeland when he was around 20. At the age of 25 he was going on an archery tournament in a city far from home by a boat , but a great storm arose and repelled him and the crew to the Northen shores of calradia. He was cold , wet and tired as he was travelling for days, but finally spotted the city Sargoth, his first days were rough as it was hard to find a home and food, after a few weeks a tournament arrived in town and he decided to particapate without hesitation, he did well in the archery rounds and was invited to the keep for a feast by King Ragnar himself, he was honoured , after a few days the tournament passed he was offered to join the Kings army, he gladly accepted because his life was bad in Sargoth. After serving a few years in the army he finally proved himself as a worthy commander and the king gave him some troops and equipment.The months passed very slowly, but one day they were attacked by an enemy army, Hallgrim used immense archery tactics but it was a slaughter , he lost half his men including his loyal servant, they were victorious, after the battle the army was tired and hungry as they marched back to Sargoth. Now he is in duty of King Ragnar and is a respected leader among the Nords.

Bio:

Haldin Harak was born in the eastern Khergit steppes in a poor tribe. At an early age he learned to ride a horse and string a bow, when he was 11 he hunted his first animal, the idol of the tribe the "The wolf", thats when a tribe member steped into adault hood. He was very proud of his first hunt, he decided to practise the bow abit more, so he practised for many many months. When he reached the age of 19 he was a master hunter for his tribe. At the age of 22 his tribe got destroyed by a rival tribe, only he and his brother escaped with their lives and travelled to Swadia to learn wielding a sword because he had heard many good things about Swadians and their swordmanship, as the months passed his swordsmanship was better. At the age of 25 the Swadians and Khergits declared a war at eachother all the Khergits were forced out of the city, he was unhappy as he had many Swadian friends there. Now, he and his brother are wandering around all Calradia in a search for a better home.

Bio:

Born in the small village Bibirev, Ilya spend his childhood in snowy lands of Raskaswa. First son of village blacksmith, he was raised as a skillful swordsman and kind and caring older brother for his four sisters, thanks for his father's teachings. But his life took a dramatic turn when he was two days away from turning 13 years old. Bandit raid took everything from him: his strong and kind father, his loving mother and four little sisters. Sight of grinning animals, raping his mother and sisters, has scarred his mind forever.
He managed to survive, fleeing mindlessly through deep drifts of snow and ice-cold rivers until falling into snow unconscious. He was soon found by local hunter. Life gave him the second chance, though taking the price of frost-bitten, amputated pinky.
After that day he never shed a tear in his life until he was 26. Cries and screams of burning bandit camp and smell of burning flesh forced him to fall on his knees, but even then they were the tears of joy. Laughing and crying, he remorselessly killed the last left alive around the camp with his favorite weapon, trophy berdiche with female name Lidia. His revenge was taken.
His life became pointless now, Ilya lay on a snow and closed his eyes. "I can sleep now", he said. "But I'm thursty", said Lidia and Ilya stood up... He had a reason to live again. And so he became a mercenary, ruthless and selfish killer who never spared a life of a guilty, was it man, woman or even a child. Ilya was happy as long as he was able to see face of his prey up close, distorted by pain and fear, spitting teeth and blood.
Ilya was labeled "Red" by other bounty-hunters for his tradition not to wash his face or hands until payment was received, so his client could be able to see all the blood that was spilled by his order. He didn't do it because he felt guilty, just because he was interested in human reaction to it.
After 5 years of freelance mercenary life, he decided to leave his motherland and took a boat to the land torn by endless war - Calradia. Perfect place to make some money and quench his thirst of killing.
Ilya decided to lend his hired blade to kingdom of Vaegirs. Though lust of profit had nothing to do with his decision, but nostalgy instead. Snowy uninhabited plains and whole culture of Vaegir lands fit his desires perfectly, reminding him of Raskaswa and his past.

Daughter of Sultan Hakim of Sarranid Sultanate, product of his youthful indiscretion with a Shariz merchant's daughter.  Her stepfather married her mother, despite the fact that she was  carrying another man's child, because her father offered him a large dowry so as to be rid of an "embarrassment."  Her mother died bearing her. Due to extensive travel with her father as a child, she is skilled with bow and scimitar and was of great aid to her father in defense of their caravans.  She also has a voracious liking for reading old books on obscure subjects. Her father was killed when bandits attacked their caravan and she was taken prisoner. Due to her reading, she knew of a sleeping drug which could be made from local plants, made some and put the bandits to sleep.  While they slept,she cut all their throats, repossessed her father's goods and took to the road as a merchant herself. She knows of her origin, and hopes one day to come to her royal father's notice.  Due to her time on the road, she is quite at ease with mercenaries, merchants and what some might term the "riffraff of the road."  Her temper is not easily aroused, but once it is, she has no mercy on enemies.

Zahid is a stout man of even temperament.  He is not prone to emotional outbursts or rash decisions.  Unlike his womanizing younger brother Nizar!  When Nizar left the family years ago it was Zahid who had to pick up the pieces.  A short time later he was conscripted into the army by his local Emir.  He proved to be an excellent officer.  He won many battles until being cut off from the rest of the army and surrounded by Vaegirs.  Zahid later escaped but refused to be hung out to dry by the army again.  He formed a band of deserters and determined to command his own future as a mercenary.  He knew that his younger brother was somewhere in Calradia.  Perhaps the two would meet again someday.  But it wasn't important; his brother was undependable anyway.

Biography: Born in the back streets of Yalen to unknown parents, the beggar has had a harsh life since birth. He has grown up living from day to day without anything guaranteed. One day a drunk crossbowman picked a fight with the beggar and tried to shoot him. To defend himself the beggar drew a knife and cut the drunk man's throat. The incident wasn't appreciated by the auhourites in Yalen. They caught him and threw him into the dungeon to await execution. What saved him was the ongoing war with Swadia. The army needed recruits, so they gave the beggar a crossbow and sent him out to fight. During the first skirmmage he saw his chance and deserted. He lost the crossbow in the process, but got his hands on a few knifes. Now he's once again trying to get by, this time as a deserter.

At the age of sixteen Zaira had killed more men than the average veteran in the Sultan's army. Just before her twentieth brithday her father was killed in brawl with another bandit leader. As the only child, Zaira now took control of her father's band. After avenging her father, she quickly picked up where he had left. Now she's on a good way of establishing her own reputation has a bandit leader.

Short Bio:

Blanca was a daughter of a Vaegir Knight. In her childhood, she often trained her sword skills, and often went hunting, training her archery skills.  At the age of 16, she had an arranged wedding with a knight of a rival family. It was a happy marriage, until the day that the husband sees her making love with her twin brother. Her husband was enraged, and wanted to kill her, but she escaped. Her brother was caught and executed, and she vowed to avenge his death. She made a pact with the Nords, that in exchange for gold, the Nords would aid her in her quest for vengeance. With an army of footmen and Vaegir cavalry and archers, she defeats her husband's army at the Battle of Silent Hill. She claimed the fiefs her husband left. But the savage Nords invaded her fief lands and terrorised the people. Now she musters her forces for a last blow which will determine the future of these lands. Her army stands eager waiting to face the Nordic demons she unleashed…

Tim Jones

Tim Jones was born into a wealthy and well educated noble family. Despite their wealth Tim Jones was denied an inheritance by his father for falling in love and marrying one of the peasantry. Distraught and angry, he set off to Calradia to make a name for himself and hopefully regain his noble title so he and his wife can live together happily, despite his father's wishes.
When he arrived in Calradia, he was ambushed by mountain bandits. Luckily, a group of Rhodok deserters passing by were able to stop the highwaymen in their tracks, saving Tim. They also robbed him of almost everything. Ever since this event he has gained an extreme liking for the polearm, with its ability to keep enemies at bay, and an extreme dislike for deserters who think themselves entitled to other men's money.

Birthed in a dark alley deep within Tihr, Caern never knew his parents and never gained a last name.  At the age of 6 he stole his first piece of bread, a few months later he got into his first fight where he killed another boy over a piece of beef.  Caern grew up in a very difficult situation, but made the most of it.  Constantly on the run, he grew knowledgeable in everything related to knives, whether it be throwing or stabbing.  He spent his whole life on the run, and at the age of 37, he is one of the most street smart men in Calradia. His main role is a melee fighter who is really quick, and deadly but not too resilient to hits.  He's sort of like an assassin, and the Executioner's robe kinda fills it out...just haven't been able to get one in game.  He has a lot of experience in fighting and so is good with his katana and quarterstaff, and has also gained skill in throwing knives.  Sorry for not being able to have an actually picture of the guy's face...but trust me, he looks like he has seen a lot in his life, and has the look of someone who's been hungry their whole life.  This is a person with a lot of character, took me a while to get just the right touch on it!

If any of the skills seem out of place or unfair, feel free to balance him out...but be sure to keep the feeling of an assassin, the quickness and lethal attacks with him!
