Building Underwater City? possible?

Could it be possible?

Do you think one day we will be able to build colony under the sea?
I do think it might be possible if we could manage to control the pressure and recycling our air.

Possible yes. Practical no.

Care to elaborate?

Do you know how much pressure there is on the ocean floor? There are thousands upon thousands of tons of water on top of you. Moreover, I bet there isn't anything down there worth the huge costs of putting a habitable building down there.

Oil. They build structures deep in the ocean for maintenance workers on the rigs, those who deal with the actual drilling part. They tend to live there in four month shifts. You don't need to build them on the ocean floor though, beauty of the ocean is you can float it wherever you want with the right amount of ballast.

The problem is, building anything underwater entails a huge additional cost simply because it's in the water. Pointless doing so when we've still got plenty of free land to build on instead.

You've been playing Bioshock again, haven't you?

I have always dreamt of my very own underwater base from where I launch sneak raids with my submarine to the shores of world to capture surprised virgins and then return to the base to do naughty things to them.

Man can always dream, no?

Ah well, I guess I'll have to stick with my basement hatch and van for now.

But building a large structure on the ocean floor(not too deep) or even in side it would makes more sense.

Sure, it's possible. Would be like building a giant submarine. It'd be hella expensive so there would have to be a good reason.

I suppose we might do this if some type of solar radiation from space forced us to go deep into the water for protection. Water may be as good or better for blocking this radiation than soil/earth. And it might be easier to build underwater than go drilling through tons of earth.
